50K is a bit early...New shocks alone won't make a significant difference. You may want to consider a Z51 or Z06 suspension (springs/sway bars) if you plan on doing some tracking...Z51 is fairly cheap and is almost as good as the Z06...

I think a new firmer (not stiff) shock will make some difference (like bilstein, or z06). It will not be major difference but the factory shocks are pretty basic and cheap (produced by the lowest bidder) so bilstein HD or sport shocks will help. Most factory shocks are pretty worn by 50 K anyways. I would also change sway bars to z06 bars and maybe springs if your really into the track thing. I installed the bilstein HD on my z51 and saw major improvement over factory with only 30k on them.
