Default Spare ignition key

Lost my spare. What should a replacement key for my '98 coupe cost? Is it dealer only because of the pellet or can Ace hardware or some such make one for me?

you need the correct resistor pellet, you can measure it yourself, buy blank on internet, and anyone can cut it.

Dealer charged me $35 for one a few years ago. When I complained, they said a Cadilac key was $75. They can measure another key OR using your VIN (and proof of ownership), cut a key.

There's a guy on the auction site Ebay that sells replacement keys, i just bought a replacement FOb from him. He has a store at mykeyless 65857 he might have the correct blank you need.

"lost my spare" tells me you still have a key. a decent locksmith will be able to read your key chip and cut a new key. $30-$40. only when you have no key to go by will you have to go to a dealer with vin and proof of ownership in hand

You are correct, sir. Just wondered what the cost would be before I went to the dealer, now know I don't have to. When I bought a spare for my C4 ten years or more ago, and the dealer charged me $21.00 I about $h!t myself. Thought I was getting $crewed, probably was. Didn't want make the same mistake without taking some KY jelly or something this time.

I have 15.00 invested in my new gm key. I put a ohm meter on both sides of the pelet, recorded the number, ordered the key. Mine was a code 6. I had my local chevy dealer cut it for free..

Go to a locksmith or a dealer, walmart, homedepot all were real shady about not anting to cut it because it had the pellet

Found blank keys on the auction site, bought two, total of about $25.00. I'll try Ace Hardware for cutting when they come in. Dealer as a distant second choice.
