I've owned both C4s and C5s and if I had to go back to a C4, it would definitely be a much later model than the 86. If you can find a really nice 96 with the LT4 in it, that would be a good choice. Or any of the LT1 C4s are pretty good, just watch out for the Opti-spark distributor.
I have an 84 silver on gun metal gray coupe which i love(Yeah I know it's a crossfire) but it runs solid and always starts. Love is a funny thing. But my 2003 is just sooo much better a car.
I agree with Matt. I also have had both and would not consoder C-4. I would consider a C-3, years 68-72, before a C-4. Better investment, more fun, lots more looks and easier to work on. A good, clean, low mileage C-5 is the way to go. Prices are dropping a bit and they blow away the old car.
That depends on whether he's gonna be putting substantial miles on it......A C3 is gonna be doing good to get 15mpg (hwy) without overdrive and fuel injection.....At $4 a gallon it's gonna add up quick if he drives it often.....We have a few members in our local clubs with C1s, 2, and 3s....When we go on our "drives" (often 200-400 miles) they have to stop 2-3 times as often for gas as those in C4s, 5s, and 6s do.....A C1-C3 is more a financial investment...while a newer Corvette is an investment in your quality of life!!

I've owned a C-4 and I would never go back. As a matter of fact if I couldn't go forward into a C-6 or another C-5 I'd just get out of Vettes.
It would be hard for me because the cars are just so different.
I have a 96 vert auto and a 00 vert 6 speed. I got the 96 first and love it. Low miles (44,000) and I have had it for 3 years and only had to change the water pump. I got the 00 vert about 5 months ago and I love the 6 speed. I could not resist the price I got the 00 vert for so it made no sense to pass up on that deal. So now the delima is which do I keep and which do I sell!!!! For the forseable future my plan is to keep them both.
Neither are DD's and they both sleep in the garage (which pisses off the wife, but oh well)
A good weekend is when I have the time to drive them both.
My buddy has an 01 A4 coupe,,wanted a M6 so he added a 95 to his stable. After helping him put a set of long tube headers and new plugs and wires,,You couldent GIVE me one of those things!!! The absurdly cramped engine bay and the @#%!@ optispark YOU CAN KEEP IT!! GM can take optispark and put it where the sun don't shine!!
Please save a little more and get the c5. I love all corvettes but there is no comparison between c4 and c5 vettes. The engineering is so superior on the c5. CCCCCCC5555555!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have both. Bought my 94 new 14 years ago and will never sell. Bought my 01 LPE TT Vert about six months ago, and hope to never sell. The C4 is like an old Hot Rod, and the C5 is smooth and refined. Somedays like today I drive the C4 and think I like it better. Then other days I drive the C5 and it's my fav. I do think if the two cars weren't so different, I would probably eventually sell one or the other.

After owning 2 C4's one being a ZR-1,I still wouldn't go back to a C4
after owning a C5.Great cars but, night and day comparison.I'd buy
another C4 but,not at the expense of getting rid of a C5.
Although I would not trade my c-5 for a c-4 now, I loved my 93 vert. I sold it with 109K on it. The new owner has driven it to Fla (from Ill) & loves it. The c-4 rode rougher, but the c-5 is much more refined. Just 2 totally different cars. If you have the opportunity to buy a c-4 that YOU WANT......go for it regardless of what anyone thinks.
