Default Corvette Trailer Hitch

Hi all, my Dad goes on alot of long tours with his Vette. I'm a fabricator by trade and I'm considering building my father a trailer that is an exact replica from the quarters back of a C5 so that he has something to attach to his car for luggage.

I know...I know...don't bust my jewels. it's not for everyone but he'll love it. Can anyone tell me if there is a receiver hitch made for a C5?

Also, he lives to far from me to take some measurements from his car so can someone please tell me what the distance from the ground to the top of the rear bumper is(in inches)? Please and thanks

Default thanks

Wow, I guess Vette people know where to buy there parts. Last but not least:

I still need to know the distance from the bumper to the ground for the engineering portion of the build. Thanks

I think this is the same hitch. A little cheaper, from Drawtite.

Post pix of your trailer when you're finished.

Default Rethinking it

Well, I had my mind set on building the thing. But I just ran across that post about the Miata...there are alot of people on that thread talking about the C5 having alot of cargo area.

Hell, maybe I should ask him before I spend all that time and energy building the thing. ...not to mention the cost.

My trailer doesn't look like what you're gonna build but I use the drawtite hitch. Works well! (ignore the haters... everytime a hitch or snow tires thread comes out... there's alot of pollution in the thread)

See lots of C5s with trailers for their race tires/equipment. Plus the added weight from the hitch helps "rotate" the car in corners

I use the draw tight hitch.

They had to lower the exhaust to install it but once in place it is almost invisible.

I normally tow with 300 pounds weight on the hitch and it tows nicely at any speed.

Great idea. Here's a couple of Vette customizers that might have parts for sale:

I think this is a great idea one my wife and I talked about last year but I have not seen a trailer yet but I also haven't done a lot searching that I could tow with my Coupe.

We always use my Explorer when we go on vacation largely because it has all the room we need for our luggage, beach chairs, cooler etc.. plus all the stuff we buy along the way. I would much prefer taking the Corvette, much more fun to drive around the New England coast and Maine then my boring Explorer, plus it gets double the mileage of my big V8 all wheel drive monster. The trailer would be used mainly on the open road to get from point a to b and back.

If anyone has any pointers on custom style trailers please post.

Default Try E-trailers.com

I've towed my teardrop for several years. Bought my hitch from www.etrailers.com and except for the actual receiver, all the rest of the hitch is tucked up behind the rear facia. If you buy a hitch that tells you to cut off any of the rear facia tabs, don't do it. Send me a Private message and I'll let you know how to install it without cutting the tabs.

5250lbs = Car+Bikes+Trailer+2 people+gear. CT to Fla with some traffic, 16.5hrs and 21mpg @77mph avg.

As fuel prices go up, I would definitely consider using my C5 with a nice teardrop to travel cross country vs an SUV or motorhome.

Default Talked to Dad

Ok, I talked to the old man. He's in love with the idea. I'm going to purchase the rear of a smashed up C5 and cut it up behind the doors. I'll post pics of it. It'll probably take me about a month to turn it into a trailer. Thanks for all the info!!!
