'99 was a good year but I'll admit I'm partial to it because I had one. As long as it doesn't have the BW tranny, its a great car. I know as I gave mine away to my son in May with 310,000 miles on it. He's got it in car shows now too and I hear its at 316,000 already.
Made my decision- I am going with the 02: Both are beautiful vettes but the price difference wasn't enough to make a difference. Thanks for all the great insight and info. I pick the silver 02 vert with 15,000 miles up tomorrow. It has the Borla exhaust, several other exterior mods and is a one owner. The floor mats have never been stepped on- the owner placed the hard clear plastic over them to keep them from getting dirty.
I will post some pics next week.
Thanks again- this is my first vert-so looking forward to continual top down driving!
Hmmmmm, sold my 02 silver Vert with 60K miles, turned right around and bought a 99 triple black vert (to match my black 99 Coupe) with 44K miles for $10K less..Had to dump about $3K back into the triple black 99 to get it up to my standards...But I still came out with $7K in my pocket, a triple black 99 Vert to match my 99 coupe, and a car with about 15K less miles.....
Both cars have long been out of warranty so that wasnt an issue...
Drove home the 02 pewter/black top vert today. It has 15,400 miles and has been babied to the max. It has the Corsa exhaust- Custom floor mats that have never been stepped on-as soon as the previous owner purchased them he also purchased the hard plastic covers to go over them. It also has the grey interior instead of the black which I like. HUD, 12 CD changer, chrome wheels, custom arm rest and tail light and license plate accessories.
The previous owner is building a new house and needed the money. He didn't want to see me drive off in it-so we met at a restaurant-he handed me the title, keys and gave me all the history. I went to his friends house where he had it stored and picked it up and drove it home.
I was sadden to sell my 07 C6 but with a son in college and a daughter one year away from college- budget priorities shift a bit. Now I have a pristine C5 and no debt. If you come through TN look for me- I will be cruising slow because I savor every mile.
Thanks for the help from all the forum friends for the insight and advice. Pictures will be forthcoming this week as soon as daughter downloads.

Great choice. Low miles and all the options.
I like Pewter also.

If your budget allows for the '02, and the cars are in similar condition, go with it. More upgrades to the platform and some things that were options on the '99 were standard on the '02.

I think it's time for a CRUISE.............
Good choise and GREAT color. Silver and mods to boot.
My comments to anyone reading the thread and wondering the same thing is that if money matters, go find an earlier year lower mileage C5. Owners typically baby these things by parking them in the garage, but you're still going to save quite a bit of money. There are some upgrades, but for the most part you won't notice them. However, I did notice that the 02-04 vettes were selling around $30k while my '97 sold to me for $19k back in '06 with only 22k miles. When I park my car next to a Black/black '02+ coupe, 99.9% of people wouldn't notice a difference. In fact, mine is usually the cleaner car, and it looks better with the magnesium wheels. If a thousands don't matter to you, then get the '02+ since they are nicer. Otherwise, save your money and get a car that almost exactly the same. I guarantee, you won't be upset by your purchase. How many people have said, "damn, I shouldn't have bought such an early model C5!"...... Exceptionally few.

Exactly...In fact, you gotta be pretty sharp to tell the difference between a 97 and a 04....Wheels and exhaust can be changed, (and usually are) Even the passenger side door lock can be replaced to replicate a newer model (97-99 had a passenger side door key opening whereas 2000-2004 models didnt have)...I sold my silver 02 Vert and bought a triple black 99 Vert to match my black 99 Coupe.....Other than the color difference the cars are virtually the same...Both had BSMs, HUD, aftermarket wheels, Corsas, 12 disc CD, etc....The ONLY difference between the two (other than the color) is the 99 has "dial-a-ride"...oh yeah, the 99 has 16K less miles than the 02 had!!!
