A Vararam works by packing the intake with air. To do so the car must throttle response is different than be moving. From a stand still the Vararam actually sucks air which causes a slight decrease in throttle response. When you are rolling the throttle response is very quick. That is also why Vararams also do not dyno well.

A CAI works by making the engines need for air on demand easier (better flow) Basically when the intake asks for air, it is less restrictive.
From a stand still the throttle response is better because the engine can get air easier...

Peace

Most places that dyno have large industrial fans they will have setup to move air towards the vehicle as if it were out on the strip so the intake is constantly getting fresh air for supercharged/turbo'd vehicles.... with vararam intakes I would definitely dyno at a place that has fan's hooked up for some more realistic numbers.

Those fans cant come close to replicating airflow at speed with the vararam or the radiator/intercooler

True, but I don’t think the airflow is like going 70mph plus. Maybe a tuner should dyno one with and without a good leaf blower blowing into the intakes.

Its pretty much cool outside air traveling at whatever speed you are going in to the motor vs. hot stagnant air in the engine bay. Vararam

Can't really give you anything on the K&N but I couldn't be more pleased with my VR. I was looking for improvement from about 20MPH and up. I don't drag or stop light race anymore but give me the look on the highway and I'll nail it. From the previous posts that's were the VR really shines. Also saw a BIG improvement in MPG with the VR.
