Two days ago my wife was driving our '99 convertible on I-75, in Sarasota, going about 65. All at once, the rev's went up and she could only make 40. She pulled over and the high temp transmission words on the dash. We had it towed to the *** Chevrolet and they said we need a new tranny...$3,000. The car shifts ok in 1st and second but will not shift into 3rd. The week before we had the car in for service at *** for a water pump and belt tensioner. If anyone has any ideas or questions that I can ask the service reps. The fluid was full but they said a little burnt. I have 90,000 miles. Does anyone know where I can get a reman transmission, if I need to go that route? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. I live in Sarasota, Florida.
I hate to say it, but it really sounds like the transmission went out. I had this happen in my Ford Probe two times (at 95000 and at 175,000). The second time, I send the car to the junkyard, the transmission repair was more than the car was worth. Usually if one gear is gone the rest are going to go soon. Find out from a transmission shop how much for a rebuild vs. a new transmission. I would not drive it if you can help it, could cause engine damage too! Their may be someone here who has broken down an automatic transmission (far and few between, to complicated) or works at a transmission shop. Good Luck!
Thanks for the info. I think you might be right about a new transmission. It always seems that these things happen when you least expect it...no warning, no sounds, nothing that indicated something was wrong. Oh, well. I still love my vette. We'll park it an fix it next month.
$3,000 - is that installed? Gene Culley - sponsoring vendor has the tranny listed for $1918.80 plus $350 core. I hope the price they quoted is installed with all charges included.
Good luck, it has been raining problems up here in CT too!! mostly brakes and bent rims
Flashbacks to high school. I drove my 1981 Cougar for a year with only 1st and 2nd gear on the auto; couldn't get over 45 so no highway miles. Lots of automatic transmission fluid sealer and conditioner. Problem did eventually go away. Not recommended, but at 16, it was drive like this or no car.
Cushingfamily,
check with Jim's Auto Parts in Sebring. They are great people to deal with, very honest and stand behind their parts. They are a very large salvage yard and deliver to Sarasota and all the way down to Naples. (I use to live there and dealt with Jim's for over 15 years)
I do not have their phone number but I am sure you can find it. Let me know if it works out for you.
The trans is probably gone. I have had a transmission rebuilt in a mustang that I had and 3 transmissions in my el camino (you think I would have learned) they all lost a gear and I went and had them redone. Look at it on the bright side you can have a shift kit put in it for almost nothing or get a built trans. You could always try changing the fluid and filter. My dad did this on our bronco that wouldn't move because of the trans he dropped the pan cleaned out a filter in there and he has been driving that truck ever since without any trans problems.
Have you ever had the fluid flushed and the filter changed in the tranny???...This should be done at 50K miles, along with a differential fluid change.......If you havent, that probably explains why the tranny failed....It's pretty cheap insurance (about $200 for flush and filter change) compared to what youre gonna be spending
