No-one will change thier mind. I have always gone with the lower 160 thermostat. However 220 to 230 is not hot, it's considered normal.
In Atlanta in the summer it gets so hot, you could cook an egg on my hood. I prefer running the car around 200, because intraffic it will still get 230's.
Also, chaging the stat alone will not get your engine coller, you also have to reset the fans to come on earlier. The stat just lets the collant circulate sooner.

The fans are set through a tune/computer.
I'm running a 160t-stat and have a few bolt-ons, but my tuner has it set that I run 185* cruising on the highway in this Southern Mississippi heat, haven't been above 197* in stop and go traffic.
There's been much discussion, and many debates over this question. Most agree that the "sweet spot" for coolant temperature is somewhere between 180 and 190 degrees F.
I was stuck in Chicago traffic and it was pushing 220 and I thought it was gonna pass it but traffic let up and I never got to see if it would have went any higher.
