On my 97 the passive feature had a variable range just like the regular key fob does. Sometimes it would lock/unlock the car a couple hundred feet away and other times I could be within a two or three steps before it unlocked the car. In my garage it was close enough to the closet in the dining area where we hang all of our keys that the car would sit in the garage beeping the horn and locking/unlocking. When I first brought the car home from the dealer I thought it had gone crazy.
Most people shut the feature off like I did as it really didn't do anything other than save the effort of pushing a button with your thumb.
To make it work with your newer car you would have to reprogram the BCM with the correct code to get the module to respond to the fob and lock/unlock the car
Bill that sounds silly and unsafe when the car is out in public.
Okay well that saves me some money, I'll just buy a regular fob to replaced my scratched one and reprogram it with the directions I've found here.

Ditto this for me. It took me a few days to figure out why my car kept honking when it was sitting in the garage. Finally realized it was the key fob being just inside the door in my kitchen. Needless to say I don't use it anymore.

Thank you again.
