Default Should I fix the A/C?

My Y2K coupe has 97,000 miles on it but still looks and runs good. I have recharged the A/C twice in the last six months and yesterday noticed it is not blowing cold enough. It took less than a can to bring the pressure up the last time. Should I spend the money to re do the entire system or just add some more Refrigerant?

Bring it to a shop asking the shop to charge the green stuff to check leaking. If it is leaking at some easy seal, then you can just replace the washers for $5.

I don't think that I would just keep putting refrigerant in without knowing where it's going.

I think there is an honest A/C shop somewhere here in Florida but have not found one yet in 50 years.

I guess it depends upon how much time and money you want to throw at it.

Easy trick is add refrig and dye. Then you'll know where the leak is located.

Might be an Oring, might be the compressor. That will give you an idea of the cost.

I bought some freon at Advance Auto and it came with some sort of little pen light/ black light thing. I didn't look for leaks with it yet, I just filled mine, so I don't know how good it works. I just got it because it came with the freon (and it looked pretty cool ). So far my AC has been doing OK with just the refill.

I assumed it was low on 134 but checked today and the pressure is OK. I always run the temp at 72F ( same as the inside of the Corvette factory) but turned it down and It started blownig some good 45F air out of the Vents.

Careful on this one, my first car an Acura Integra had me chasing AC problems for over 3 yrs at a total cost of $4K and it was out again when I sold it.

Default AC Problem

Hi, If it were me I would trace down the leak,(not really that difficult to do with the dye or a hailite torch), and if it were anything other than the evaporator I would fix it. The evaporator is a big job, and not one that I would enjoy getting in to. If I were keeping the car for many, many more years I would get the most reputable shop that I could find and have the evaporator fixed there. Otherwise if I could get away with a few top offs a year I would go that route. One word of caution, if you are adding refrigerant a few times a year, you need to add the stuff with the oil in it,or you will soon be looking at a broken compressor.
Good Luck
