Default A/C problem

Ok guys, I need some help. I did a search and found "some" info but I need some more.

Recently my driver's side stopped blowing cold air while the passenger side was ice cold. Did some research, the driver's side actuator could be shot. Pulled the fuse to see if they reset, no change. Turn the temp all the way down to 60* to bypass the door, still the same. I noticed something else, the passenger side ONLY blows whatever temp the driver's side is set at. So I could have the driver's side set to max cold, turn the passenger side to max hot and it'll still blow cold. If I change the driver's side to max hot they both blow hot as hell. So basically I can't control the passenger side independently from the driver's side.

So what am I facing here? Are both actuators shot? Is my head unit shot?(it IS dimming, I was going to get the LED's redone)

No HVAC codes on the DIC. This is a dual climate, digital system BTW.

Let me know what you guys think, I don't want to start throwing $$ at things if I don't have to. Both actuators or a failing head unit?

Hi Frosty, it's difficult to diagnose from the description, you really need to go through the diagnostics. The first thing I would do is the fuse 27 pull. Ig off, pull fuse #27, wait no less than a full 60 seconds, and replace, and listen to hear if the actuator doors go through their motions. If that doesn't work, the next thing I would do is to verify that you have a proper charge of refrigerant, there are threads on here as to how to do that. If you don't have a proper charge of refrigerant, the driver side will blow warm before it affects the pass side, and from your description it is possible that your charge is low, and therefore the dr side will not blow cold, but pass will, and then because you can't change the pass side different frm the dr side, the pass side actuator is bad. The fact that you control head is dimming may or may not have anything to do with it. They can dim and still function. Also on the pre 2001 cars the actuators can sometimes need to be reindexed, if that is the case it is just as easy to replace them with post 2001 units and not have the problem again, just cost a bit more to buy the units.
Read the following thread, it has a ton of info on your problem. Check the ref charge and let us know what it is.
Good luck

If you set the driver control on 60, it overrides the passenger control. Set it above 60, and the passenger control should work independently. If it is an actuator door problem, I would think you would be getting an HVAC code BO361 and or BO441 on the DIC.

Freon is fine, I set the driver's side above 60 and the passenger side still doesn't change when I turn the dial. Still no codes.

The actuators are cheap, I might just change them both, they're just a pain in the *** to get to.

I'm having the exact same problem... Driver side warm air, pass side cold. I was checking a thread earlier this week where someone ran new lines and got it working, but his situation was just plain air, rather than cold or hot.

Good luck, and be sure to post the fix if you diy!

I will, the freon pressure was fine but I might have my buddy just evacuate the whole system and start fresh. Maybe there's a slow leak somewhere? I don't use the AC much but I hate when stuff doesn't work. I can't complain though, 10yr old car, 90K+ miles...this isn't that major of an issue.
