Another method is, when the fuel light goes on you have less than 3 gallons remaining. Every car I have owned, in the few times I've driven to when the light comes on and immediately fuel up, the total amount filled was 2.5-3 gallons from total tank capacity.
The avg mpg/inst mpg of the DIC is not really accurate and tends to be a little generous.
