I need to replace both side brake scoops on my Z06. How hard is it do do and how long does it take per side? I have 4 bolts on the replacement scoops and noticed that I need to remove the front wheel well covers to access the area. Do I need to remove the lower side panel where the scoop is mounted as well?
Jack and support vehicle
Remove rear wheels
Remove wheelhouse lining (the liner inside the wheel well). (7 bolts I believe)
Remove bolt supporting the brake cooling duct
Remve the cooling duct
Remove 4 nuts on brake cooling scoop
Remove scoop
To install ....
4 nuts torqued to 27 lb/INCH
1 bolt for the cooling duct to 17 lb/INCH
7 bolts for the liner to 17 lb/INCH
Wheel lug nuts to 100 lb/ft
Thank you. From that description, about 1 1/2 hours to completion? I also have some carbon fiber side scoops, but I am thinking about using those only for car shows, slap them on over the factory ones when I am sitting still. Would you install the carbin fiber side scoops as your primary side scoop?
Think about replacing your factory ducts with the CF versions you already have. If you just try to glue (they won't just "sit" on top) them over the stockers, I don't think you'll be happy with the fit/look. It's a little more work, but the finished look is MUCH cleaner. Crappy pic from my old car, but you get the idea...

The first time you do it .... maybe over an hour .... after that, less than an hour to do both sides.
If you look closely at your current scoops they will probably appear "pitted" or "sand blasted". The scoops do actually sit out in the air stream and take quite a beating from small road debris. If you want a scoop for "car shows" I think you will need to consider putting the CF ones on at the show, or putting them on before you leave for the show, but tape them up for the drive.
Thanks guys. I think I will stick with the factory stuff and just play with the carbon fiber as needed. Heck, at less then an hour do replace them, I guess I could prep my car for a car show and be done with and change them back. In Germany, the high speed driving would kill the nice carbon look of the bling bling carbon covers.
I also have to deal with the fact I have DRM coolers on each side, but it appears that I can still do most of the work by just loosening the coolers as they sit right behind each scoop.
How does one post pics in the forum? I have some pics I want to post of the return of my car after the paint shop had it.

Basically you have to put the pictures on some server in an area that the public can access. Then when you want to include the picture in the post you use the "IMAGE" icon and that will give you a pop-up box in which to enter the URL of the photo ( http://www.myserver.zzz/pictures/picture1.img or whatever ..... )
As tbrent says .... many people use photobucket ( http://photobucket.com/ ) as the public server.
This may be a newbie question but why do they need to be replaced?
Do they somehow get damaged by driving?

EDIT: oops- looks like I need to read more carefully.
Replaced mine, all was going well until the darn stud decided to keep spinning in the plastic since the nut stuck to the threads. I had to use a dremel to very carefully cut the nut and stud off.
I bought mine from Fitchner Chevrolet. I asked to have them shipped to me using USPS and they arrived just fine. I will be doing my scoops this weekend, while I eat some scoops of ice cream of course.
Mine are pitted, but $200+/- seems like a lot to spend for the inevitable to happen again.
Thanks for the easy to follow directions and part numbers though.
Has anybody tried removing the oem scoops, sanding them down and painting them to match the body color? It would seem one could do that several times before they'd need to be replaced.

I think you'd be better off leaving the scoops the "matte black" that they are now .... if you paint the scoops picture what they will look like in a few weeks as road debris starts to pit them. With the Matte Black plastic unless you get really close you can't see the damage. Painted, any damage will expose the black plastic underneath .... I think it would look ugly.
i am in the process of getting another pair of scoops and having them painted to match the car. then after 6 weeks to let the paint cure out, i am going to take them to a shop and have some clear bra material applied to the leading edges. i have the clear bra on my front bumper, headlight buckets, license surround and the mirrors, and you can't tell it is there.
I got my carbon fiber ones from RK sport for like $155 shipped. I tried to just glue them on over the stockers last weekend and it went badly. I layed on the contact cement really thick and they would not make nearly enough contact with the stock ducts to bond. The fit of the covers just isn't good enough to glue them onto the stock ducts. Luckily , some rubbing alcohol cleaned everything up.......so I was debating on sending them back to RK as I was not looking forward to going through all the trouble of tearing apart the inner fender to replace the stock ones with the carbon ones permanently. But, after reading sleazy riders plan, I'm gonna go with that. Mount the carbon covers permanently and use the clear bra material to keep them from getting beat up, genious! Looking at the prices of the stockers, I don't feel as bad for what I paid for the carbon ones. Besides RK, I think west coast muscle cars carries the carbon ones as well. Good luck, Rain
