I really think he is talking to the "ricer" crowd and not the actual Sports car crowd. I know a BUNCH of people who prove his point exactly in WRX, EVO, etc... He even mentions a WRX in the article. Read it again with THAT crowd in mind and I think he is 100% correct. Just my $.02.
OK... I read and now I'm headed to the garage to do some other unneccessary mod...
Sure some folks are going to be duped by slick advertising but what i noticed in almost every instance (at least on this forum) is that when someone inquires about a mod, the response is "what are you looking for", a 10 sec car, a road course car, street car, etc.
Although the best laid plans do not always get the desired results, at least we have the dedicated and willing population to help and assist through experience.
Now I'll go out a do that unneccessary mod!

I believe I prefaced what posted up by saying that most of the members on CF are excellent and have a good read on HOW to modify the C5. Unfortunately not everyone does
I'm relatively new to this forum, but I agree with the above posted, members here (at least that I came across here so far) do appear to know what they are talking about and offer helpful and positive advise/solutions specifically to what your end goal is. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about some other car forums I was a part of. My guess would be that the Vette population is older and therefore have more experiance and reason comes before emotion and personal taste. Specifically with regards to modding there is, at least in my opinion, not much one can do to improve for example the look of a vette. In general I don't see what is so bad about modding cars. There are some things I would never do to my car but if people like certain mods, who am I to tell them not to perform those mods on their vehicles.
With regards to the following comment, I would have to disagree.
"If you've just spent a couple of grand to improve something, you will believe it's working." I used to have a WRX which I did mod, it did not sound as a nascar but when I was finished with it, it had more than enough power. Going with a front mount intercooler requires a different blow off valve set up on a WRX (at least in most cases), as the original one mounted right onto the intercooler. I used a cheap version from ebay and the spring in it cracked/broke in numerous places after two months of use. Later on I acquired an rx7 one of the stock valves stopped working so I purchased an authentic Greddy bov and it is still working with no problems, however it was almost four times more expensive. This was just one time when a more expensive part worked better than a cheaper one. Just my opinion/experience.
My $0.02

The Old Ones wonder why today's kids want to "improve" cars. This is partially because something like an '05 Mustang V6 — does the term "secretary's car" come to mind? — has more horsepower and is quicker than an '84 Corvette. Put both on the same tires and the '05 V6 would give the '84 Vette all it could handle on a road racing circuit.
Good to know it only took Mustang just over two decades to catch up, because three decades would be embarrassing.
Interesting replies so far. I think the writer was referring to "ricer mods" more so than Vette mods or F-body mods. At any rate, I am sure that someone out there has made a mistake or two (not that anyone would admit to) with modifications to a C5. I think some C5 owners (C6 too) won't ever be satisfied with their car until is looked like and sounded like a NASCAR racer. (nothing wrong with that if that is what you want, but not me )
I do agree with this part of the article to a degree:
On the street, it's almost impossible to accurately assess whether a modification has aided performance. People often judge handling by how the car rides and acceleration by noise: If it's rough and loud, it's got to handle better and be quicker, they think. This is the "Bactine Theory": If the medicine hurts, it must be working. The Placebo Effect also comes into play: If you've just spent a couple of grand to improve something, you will believe it's working.
I think some (I emphasize the word "some") folks buy into certain mods and think they are improving performance when in fact they are not (the overstated CAI claims, the TB bypass, etc, etc....)
