Default hot center console on trip

So I am driving across country hauling a uhaul behind my vette (see gas mileage post for details):

- AND: maybe i should post this is a new post, but why should i stay away from 6th gear? That will keep rpms low, or is that bad for the tranny? Ive been driving in 6th gear for almost 500 miles, wow am i killing my tranny? The center console is getting really hot as im driving (i believe where the tranny is), or is this just the drive train? Anyone have any coments on this, or had the center console get hot? I can feel it through the carpet, and my change in the center console gets hot.

The C5 uses a transaxle setup. It is located behind the passanger area. What you are feeling is the heat from the exhaust system that is partially in the tunnel between the seats. Adding a chassis stiffner available through venders above the exhaust will help to reduce this heat to a moderate level. Driving in 6th gear pulling an abnormal (trailer) load may put an added load on the engine, since it will be out of the power band and that can cause added heat due to "lugging" the engine. The few bucks difference in fuel milage is not worth damaging the engine or driveline components.

Insulate your tunnel on the inside under the console and behind the carpeting. Many options if you do some searching on CF.
Search Frost King Mod by Mike Mercury. Or Crazy Cowboy who sells a pre cut kit..........tons of options.

I used the Frost king and doubled the layers on the console sides and top. Made a huge difference

I would think that most, if not all of the time, you should not be in sixth if you are hauling a trailer.
With or without the trailer, you will get the tunnel heat.
I insulated mine and it definitely helps.

What I didn't see is the speeds you're traveling at - if you're up around 70ish, then 6th should be good, but if you're around 55, I would be in 5th.

Averaging probably around 70mph so 6th is probably good? So is this exhaust heat going to ruin anything? Seems not, i drove 16 hours pretty much straight today (1 hour break), is it going to melt anything if i keep this up tomorrow? The Nevada desert is what is going to worry me. Should i keep the heater on or not worry about it? thanks

- and whats up with My fuel gauge keeps reading Check Gages and Low Fuel and the meter goes to zero. Any thoughts. Other than that the drive across country in the vette is pretty comfortable!

no it won't melt anything except your candy bars...

Stop and get a couple of bottles of Chevron Techroline, if your gas gague is not to far gone it should fix it for you...

Peace

I would keep an eye on your RPM's I wouldn't want to push them too high for an extended period of time (like up steep inclines) for fear of blowing your main rear seal on the engine.

- i should stop posting the same thing in 2 threads, but maybe you guys have an opinion also:
- I may just be paranoid, but I swear i smell something burning, she feels like shes driving fine now with the uhaul off, but sometimes it smells like natural gas???? Does that make any sense, and what could this be? It doesnt smell like its coming from the vents, almost by the floor board. I may just have to bring her in a get it checked out.

Could it be that your cats are overheating which will cause them to fail?

Off topic, but I just did the same. The seat is now so tight against the center console that I've had to turn off easy entry. It would make a loud noise from the seat rubbing, and put so much load on the seat motor that I could hear it struggling. Did you have any issues with this?
