Thinking of having the sides and rear hatch window tinted.
Want to keep it legal (in NC) to minimize any inspection hassles. The following is from the NC DMV site. It says 35% is limit, with 32% pass. Not sure what the factory tint level is and how close is the factory tint % vs. the 32% limit.

NCDMV -
Windows may not be any darker than 35% visible light transmission. This standard is considered to be met if the window tint is no lower than 32% visible light transmission when measured by the station with a photometer.

Probably don't want to take the side glass up to the limit allowed.
Can anyone who's had this done give me suggestions on how dark to go.

You might want to check with your state and see if the 35% limit is for all windows or just the side ones. Here, we can have 35% on the sides, but as dark as we want on the back (and if a four door, the back side windows can also be darker than 35%).
I would go with 35% on the sides and if you can, go darker on the rear. Just remember the darker you go on the back, the more difficult it is to see at night.
