Default Exhaust question

How bad is it performance wise to run straight pipes?

The alignment of my exhaust tips on my crappy Granatelli exhaust has prompted me to consider just pulling the mufflers off completely.

I should note that I'm not asking about pulling off the cats or stock H pipe...just pulling the Granatelli system off where it attaches behind the axle.

Other than being louder, I don't know that it would hurt anything. Someone will correct me if I'm missing something.

Also, I assume it wouldn't put any stress on the exhaust system to take off the mufflers? I am thinking of just having the over the axle pipes that point towards the ground. That way there'd be no exhaust gas exiting into any other components.

I did it for a little over a week. My first trip to the strip with this car was early may just after The Mid West Nationals. good (cool) air and good traction.Ran exhaust through Corsa touring. Best pass 13.08/110.23. June I took the mufflers off( made a couple of 90 degree turn downs that I clamped on) Air was much warmer in June went 2 weeks in a row( and drove around like that in between trips.Car ran fine on street and strip.both nights I was able to run 13.teens (13.14 and 13.15)with the warmer air I'd say overall performance was about even. With stock H pipe you still get some of the "motor boat" burble at idle(the same thing people criticize corsa of) just louder as well as the "crackle pop" on deceleration.Bottom line performance is about the same,,just louder!!One down side is the car seemed REAL quiet when I put the mufflers back on!! Side note,,LEOs didn't notice the car as long as I didn't get on it(or back off sharply) as a matter of fact leaving the strip I had to accelerate past a traffic stop leaving the strip the first night. You can probably get away with it like that as long as you don't do anything silly around the LEOs.There is a very noticeable increase in the drone,,but not as bad as you would imagine!

Good info, thanks.

My only other concern is the rigidity of the system...although with the Granatelli the damn thing moves around all the time anyway so I probably can't put any more stress on it than it already has. No matter what I do I can't get the left side to really stay tight on the over the axle pipe. Not to mention the tips weren't welded straight and no matter what I do they will always be off.

Shouldn't be too hard to rig up a little support somewhere along the pipe.Wouldn't have to be all that big or heavy!!

Yea good point. I think it would be ok...would be nice if someone that has done this would chime in just to be sure though.
