Consensus is that it's not worth DIY. I paid $1100 to have my top replaced, the sunvisors recovered, and the outside seat bolsters and header bow recovered in leather.
I'm having this done on Monday. I purchased a replacement top from Zip Products, they were competitive and are relatively close to my house. The cost for the top was $644 (price was $544 + tax, shipping, handling). Shipping is very expensive on such a large item, so shop around.
The installer cautioned me against purchasing a used top from a doner car. In fact, he refused to install anything but a new top. He had no motivation to lie to me, since I was providing my own parts.
Oh, and if your headliner is in good shape, then your installer can reuse it and and save yourself almost $200 in parts.
I've found that installation costs on anything vary quite a bit depending on what part you live in the country. People from Alabama will tell you it costs $80 to have a new top install, while it's probably $800 in California. The best estimate I could find in my area was $600.
Total cost will be about $1,250 for me.
