Default Heads up display

When I say I'm a new Corvette owner, I mean new. I bought my first Corvette Saturday 8-2-08. Not quite a week ago. I'm excited. Please bear with me.

My car has the Heads Up display and it works, but I can't get the image to center on the windshield. I've gone up and down with the toggle switch, and the image goes down but won't come up high enough to see without sitting very foward in the seat.

I looked briefly around the forum and didn't find anything discussing this problem. Anyone have any clue to this problem ?

Joe

Hi Joe,
Congrats on your car. The HUD will only be visible in the lower portion of the windshield. You can't get it to where it's centered between the dash and the top of the windshield. At it's highest, its only an inch or two above the hood when you look at it.

How tall are you? I would suggest you try adjusting the seat as well to get things lined up. Let us know what happens.

It may be that your pivot bolt has broke in the HUD. When you move it up and down, does it seem to move sideways as well?

Thanks MAX and 88. Well, I'm 5'10". Although I tell my wife I'm 6'3". I've driven other C-5s that the HUD (thanks) was right in the middle of the windshield. There is only vertical movement with the toggle switch. Is the pivot bolt something I can get to and fix ? When I mentioned it to the Chevrolet dealer this morning, they started talking about replacing the whole unit. They also mentiioned a spring or springs that could be broken. Joe

GreenJoe, My 2000 has the HUD and as said earlier, it is positioned in the lower portion of the windshield. It does move up and down within its own parameters. I feel that GM would not allow the HUD to be centered exactly in the middle of the windshield because it would obstruct the driver's view. If you drove other C5's with it exactly in the center, I'm not sure what was happening.

Also, polarized sun glasses will cancel out the HUD and you won't see anything. Several of us learned that from experience.

Enjoy your new ride.

Since you are new, here is a good chance to learn how to post pictures on the forum. With a picture from the driver's seat showing the highest position of the HUD display on the windshield, people might be able to see if this looks normal.
You can get to the projector, but it is not simple. You would need to follow the instructions for the HUD installation where you remove the entire dashboard. It's been awhile since I did it, but it would probably take about an hour or so for removal.

I also tell my wife I'm a PhD. She thinks it has to do with education or something. It really means Post Hole Digger.

When I, all 5'10", oh all right, 5'9", of me sits in the seat, there is no HUD. None. If I sit up close enough to put my chin on the steering wheel, I can see the HUD. The toggle makes it disappear completely. As I stated, my friends C-5 has the display high enough that I could see it immediately. I had never seen such a thing before. When I first laid eyes on my car, I assumed that I had misunderstood about the HUD.

Anyway, this just sounds like something that in not sitting squarely in the dash. Like it's too high or too low in the front or back. I'm guessing the cost to replace the HUD is a lot.

Thank you for all your advice so far.

Joe

Congrats on your C5 - but my HUD did not display in the center of the windshield either. It only has limited up/down movement.

Joe,

It definitely sounds like the pivot bolt is broken IF your havin to sit up in the seat all the way to the steering wheel just to see it. It isn't too bad to take out. Here are the instructions (this actually covers adding a HUD to a non-HUD car but you'll see how to get to it)

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=2077521

It really does look A LOT worse than it actually is. Your first time it'll probably take ya about an hour or so. Once you've done it though, ya can have the whole dash out in about 20 min.

Joe I'm reading this and wanting to yell at some of the forum members that replied as you tried to explain the problem but they just don't understand haha. I have no idea what is wrong either and have the same issue in my newly purchased C5. It was the first thing I noticed when I got into the car, and the last owner told me that was the first time that had every happened LOL. Along with many other BS stories and first time things had ever happened in my first test drive...you have to be careful theres a lot of snakes out there waiting to shoot their venom your way.

Any way I would also love to know how to fix this without replacing the projector. I dont know if too many people on here have taken apart a projector to know what's broken inside of it, but it sure would be nice to fix instead of replace since everything else works on it. Looks like we're on our own to figure it out.

If anyone needs a projector, a friend of mine has one and is askin $200 plus shipping for it. However, once you get the unit out and take it apart (I think about 4-6 screws hold the assembly together after ya get it out of the car) you'll see the part that's the issue pretty clearly. Lemme get my old HUD out and take some pics.

This sounds like what happened to me, mine was slowly getting lower and lower until it 'fell off' the bottom of the windshield.

Now when i put my head against the visor, i can see just the top of the RPM range of the hud display. I havent had a chance to get into the dash yet because id ont know how to take it apart

my height button doesnt move the hud anymore which makes me believe it broke and slipped out completely.

Ok, here are the pics. I may start a separate thread for this too but I'm not sure what exactly to name it. When you have to lean up to the steering wheel just to see your HUD, this is what the cause is. First, once you've removed the HUD using these instructions here:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=2077521

Once you have the HUD out, remove these four screws:

After you get the four screws out, you can then open up the HUD housing. **BE CAREFUL AS THERE IS A WIRE CONNECTED** (shown below)

Next, remove these three screws to remove the HUD mirror and bracket:

Once you get this off, be careful as there are wires going to the bracket.

Notice the blue line? Well there's supposed to be a tit that sticks out there and inserts into the hole where the red arrow points. That allows it to pivot back and fourth. If you look in your HUD, you'll find this small tit somewhere in there (as it couldn't go anywhere)

Unfortuantely you can't reattach it. As you can see, I even tried to epoxy a tit but it didn't work.

You can take the two screws that hold the bracket on the mirror out and separate it.

and then have it off.

After looking at it again, I'm going to try to drill out the hole on the bracket above and insert a small enough bolt that will fit through the hole it pivots in (pictured above with the red arrow)

I'll let everyone know what I find.
