Will it throw any lean codes. How easy is it to install? My 04 Z with a Vararam CAI would occasional throw lean codes every now and then. Hopefully the Honker isn't the same.
Will it throw any codes. I know that the Vararam does. How easy is it to install? Thanks!

Mine didn't throw any codes. About an hour to install and best of all smog legal in CA! I love mine. If you decide to get one I am sure you'll like it too!

no codes thrown with mine but then I had my PCM tuned by ECS....great job Doug....
the install instructions are pretty simple, with the critical part being the mock-up assembly,...always remember, measure twice, cut once...

I researched CAIs pretty much in depth (only true Cold Air Intakes) and settled on the Honker last year and got on one of the group buys here and like the Honker very much. The install isn't hard at all, it's just a bit time consuming is all I can see anyone complaining about. I do believe the Flip Tie Mod probably does about the same thing, other than the Honker also relocates the MAF sensor to the throttle body where it belongs. I also like the fact that Callaway went the extra steps to get the Honker CAFE approved (and stickered), and it looks very OEM in appearance, so if you're looking for a "Look at me" item, move on as it ain't fluorescent red in color or any such hi profile thing like that. If you have the coin to buy an after market CAI, I would recommend the Honker over what else I've seen out there. If you are $$$ tight, just do the Flip Tie DIY mod and kinda do the same thing, with just a smaller area filter. Both require cutting the radiator shroud to receive true cold air, which is what it's all about in the first place.
Why the heck would the Vararam, or any CAI throw codes?????? Other then not installing it correctly....

I bought and installed a Vararam velocity stack and did some testing on the street. My butt-o-meter is pretty sensitive to acceleration subtleties from the accumulated passes I've made at the drag strip.
The velocity stack made my throttle less responsive to driver input not more, the opposite of the marketing claim. Took it off; reboxed and sold it.
I'm not sure if the velocity stack works on any intake, but it didn't deliver on my 2002Z with a Halltech CAI.
Regarding lean codes, most cold-air intakes will throw occasional codes, particularly during off throttle coasting, say coming down a grade, decelerating off-throttle toward a traffic light. Very occasional event and nothing to worry about. That lean code reflects a transitory event; alway "history" and never "current."

After doing some research, it looks like most people don't get any codes while some do. I guess I'll just take my chances.

I have had my Vararam on for about a year now. It was also on a good couple of months before I had the car tuned at ECS after headers and gears. Never had codes on it from day one. As far as driving in rain, we drove through torrential rains on are way back from Mo. and not once did I have an issue...
I've had the Callaway on my 02 coupe for a year. No tune, never had any codes. Install is straight forward; follow the advice to fit and measure carefully before cutting. I recommend a radiator screen like the one from Elite Engineering as part of your install.
