If your existing key has a resistor chip on it, you will need to go to a GM dealer ............ the FOB you can get off Ebay for about $18 including shipping which includes programming instructions.
I just got done doing both for a '04 I recently purchased.
People keep posting about buying fobs on ebay for $18, but they won't work on your 2000 You have to buy a fob specific to that year (98/99 will program, but have the passive switch). Check with Gene Culley, his prices are the lowest I've seen for fobs. His last price I saw was $58 plus shipping for the 2000. The earlier years were far more expensive than 2001 and up. Same for the tire pressure sensors. For the key you need to buy a blank that matches your resistor pellet and have it cut. If you know what resistance you need, you can buy that on ebay and have it cut by a locksmith.

No, you can get replacements at a local key shop cheaper than a dealer - most of them can even figure out which value you need. These pellet keys are very common

If you want to purchase a new key - all C5 keys have a VATS pellet on them. To duplicate the VATS pellet (which you will have to do if you want to be able to start the car), you need to know the resistance value of the chip.
There are 15 possible values. In order to determine which one you have, you can set a digital volt meter to Ohms and measure the value. Once you have the reading - look at the attached chart and figure out which one is right for you.
You need to read the resistance of the key. If you have a digital volt meter, set it on ohms mode and measure the resistance of the pellet on your key. The BCM is programmed for a specific resistance value. The BCM measures the voltage drop across the key pellet. If it is within +/-10%, then the car will start.
The 15 resistor codes are:
Key# Value (Ohms)
1 392
2 523
3 681
4 887
5 1130
6 1470
7 1870
8 2370
9 3010
10 3740
11 4750
12 6040
13 7500
14 9530
15 11800
As far as the replacement fobs are concerned - the '97 through '99 fobs have a PASSIVE/ACTIVE slider switch on the front of the fob at the bottom. The 2000 fobs were identical, but without the PASSIVE/ACTIVE switch. 2001-2004 were identical. But the two different generations of FOBS (or more accurately known as RFA - remote function actuator) are not cross compatible.
There is an FCC number on the reverse side of all generations of FOBs - just make sure the replacement that you purchase matches the one that you have.
Programming a replacement fob is covered in the owner's manual.
a competent locksmith will have a little black box that can read your chip and then he can cut your key. eBay fobs are a roll of the dice....... better to go new, you'll know what you have.
