the rear glass is coming loose from the canvas roof. it's starting to separate on the passenger half...the drivers side is fine. anybody have this happen to them? how did you resolve it.
Common problem. Check the forum there has been numerous posts on how to fix. I ended up replacing my whole top, cost about $1500.00.
Others were able to glue it back in.
Originally, I tried to glue it. It worked OK and might have lasted more than the 4 or 5 weeks between when I glued it and when I replaced my top.
The truth is, my top was faded, picked and generally pretty tired looking after eight years on the car. It was time for a new one.
I just got a new top this week from Zip Products and had it installed. The final cost was about $1250 parts and labor.
The new top looks much better than the old one! It's tighter, stitched better, and a dark black color.
Interestingly enough, the new top has a few changes to address deficiencies with the design of the original part. Firstly, it's cut so my windows don't rub the corners of the top when I close it (three C5 convertibles I looked at had this problem).
Secondly, it's double stitched around the glass to hold it in place. My original top obviously had no stitching around the glass. The manufacturers of my new top have also added more material in this area to increase it's strength. Not only does it look nicer than my original top, but it should keep the rear glass from falling out again.
If you do get a new top, then consider the condition of your headliner. If it is in good shape, then you can save money by reusing it.
