I have alway heard headers are more trouble than they are worth, prone to come loose, leak, rust out, create heat, etc. Yet, I hear a lot of people on here going to headers. I guess the popular headers being made stainless steel takes care of the rust problem, but is working loose an issue? Is extra heat an issue?
I'm planning to get an exhaust at Carlisle, and wondering just how far I should go, just cat back, cat back and X, or all the way with cat back and X and headers.
I'm not out to tweak every possible HP out of my car, this started mostly looking for a better sound, but while I'm at it....
Does anybody do header installs at Carlisle, and, if so, anybody have any idea of how header installation costs?
I can't help you out with question about install or cost, but if you're worried about the headers getting loose and leaking, just use locking header bolts, they can't back off.
I ran Kooks long tube headers with high flow cats and x-pipe on my previous 97 for a few years before I sold it...
Never had any issue you speak of on the car. When I had them installed, I also bought a thermal tunnel plate to reduce the heat in the console area...but, it got hot in that area way before the headers were installed...
I just ordered a set of LG Street LT's for my current 97...don't plan on any issues with those either.
Best bet to reuse your old exhaust gaskets to the head or buy new GM ones...they seal the best and if the bolts are torqued to spec...I don't see them really having an issue...at least a re-check of torque would not hurt I guess.
My local shop charged me $350 for the install...I know the guys pretty well...I believe I read of a few installers being at Carlisle this year...you just missed out on the LG Street Group Purchase which was a great deal!
Expect a tune to be required to get the full benefit from a LT install. I am going to run mine thru a stock Z06 catback...be careful what you choose after the header install though- they will GREATLY increase the sound of the exhaust note themselves!

Get a quality set and do a good install and you'll be fine. People who say headers are not a good idea have no idea what theyre talking about. Enjoy the new HP

100% I have had mine for years now. No issues whatsoever.
We will be there with a full inventory of headers and corsa exhaust as well as diablosport, Halltech intakes, STS Turbo, Vortech and procharger super chargers. We will be offering some amazing show specials. As for the install we believe most corvette owner look at there vehicle as a family member. We feel that a family member should be taken care of with pride not in a field it should be done in a controlled environment in case any issues arise they can be addressed not just overlooked replacement parts where not available at the show. Where the vehicle is covered by insurance and all part and tools are assessable.
They're not a problem on the majority of cars. You don't need locking bolts, the stock ones will work fine. If it starts to leak, just re-tighten the bolts. You will be amazed at how easily the car becomes to work on once headers are on the car. If you need help with the install let me know, Iwould be glad to help.
