Anyone mod the leather hurst shifter **** to fit the c5 shifter threads?? I have a hurst shifter already and want to use the same **** i had in my old camaro. thanks for any help.
The f-body Hurst has a larger bore than the C5 **** - it has a long smooth bore about .660" in diameter and terminates at the top with a short length of threads that do not match the C5 9/16"-18 UNC shifter thread.
I designed an adapter to fit into the Hurst ****.
It screwed into the Hurst and then the ****, in turn, screwed onto the shifter shaft. The shoulder on the bottom of the adapter had a set screw to lock it onto the shaft.
I liked it but wanted it a bit lower so I cut the exposed portion of the adapter and the outer threaded section off. This eliminated the set screw lock so I used pipe tape on the shaft threads to make the fit tight and keep the **** from rotating.
I recently added a set screw back onto it by cutting a small hole in it ( can't see it when installed) and drilled and tapped it.
I made a couple of extra of these at the time and sent them to a couple of forum buddies who wanted the same setup. I am currently running a new MGW shifter/ C6 **** setup I recently installed. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...installed3.jpg
What's kinda' funny is that my '03 Mustang GT had almost the same **** on it from the factory.
I tried the MGW pistol grip **** and sold it after a few months. Nice, but not my cup of tea. I never cared for any of the spherical ***** out there either - just don't feel right in my hand. The reason I like the Hurst and C6 ***** is they are very similar to the **** in my '90 300ZX that I drove for 14 years. The ergonomics in that car were perfect for me, including the shifter and ****.
The shifter **** is one of the most personal choices you can make on a manual shift car since you interact with it so frequently. I've never been one to recommend a particular **** because everyone has such differing preferences.
