Im getting ready to put on some Delco S/D rotors and want to ensure im reading some posts correctly. In doing the rotor replacement search i saw a few members suggested coating these rotors with a clear coat or Hi-temp paint since the Delco rotors are not Zinc plated. Can anyone confirm this? If this is true, how? Do i simply coat the entire rotor to prevent rust or just the paint the hat area (no contact with brake pad area)? I had never heard of this technique but want to do it right. These rotors are simply for show and shine and a tad bit of spirited street driving. NO TRACK TIME.
Any other suggestions or tips from folks who have done this Mod? Thanks
I just bought these and installed them on my car. The hats on mine came painted already, however, there is still a small section that does not get swept by the brake pad therefore it rusts over. I guess you could just paint more of the rotor surface with hi-temp paint. I am not familar with the zinc coating process.
DO NOT paint the rotor surface, under any circumstances! Only paint the hat area, and be sure to cover the rotor surface so no paint or overspray gets on it. The area that contacts the brake pads should never, ever be painted.
Its not that big of a problem with getting paint on the rotor surface....after a few stops it gets swipe off by the brake pads. Some of the OE rotors from GM come coated with some sort of rust hibitor on the face of the rotor. I have painted quite a few rotors and havent had any problems with paint on the pad surface.

Yes and you are supposed to thoroughly remove the rust inhibitor (also known as grease) from the rotor with brake cleaner before installing them on the car.
Paint the hat not the rotor. Use blue painters tape or cut a template out to lay over the rotor. Getting a little minor overspray on the rotor probably won't kill you, but completely painting the rotor might. Taping takes about 30 minutes for all 4 rotors. Use high-temp paint and apply multiple coats, allowing time to dry ~ 24hrs before driving with them will help insure the paint holds up under heat and over time.
