Default Need Driving Tip For My 04Z

Was driving home on Interstate 95 today, minding my own business, driving at about 65mph, when some kids pulled up along side and wanted to test me. They were in what I think y'all refer to as a "ricer". I said to myself: "Hey, why not?". I down shifted to 4th and could not lose them. Speed got up to about 90-94. Then I backed off.

Should/could I have gone to 3rd and how fast could I have gone in 3rd? Owners manual says not to shift down more then 2 gears at once. What do you think? I was embarrassed and wish I had my 07Z back!!

That Sucks!! Yeah you could have shifted to third and smoked them!
I'd say find the time to get to know your car, Do some spirted Acceleration in different gears in a safe location..

You can run 1st gear out to 55 or so before you red line. If you would have dumped it in to second it would have come alive. however I think you would have been better off shifting to 3rd and just roll in to the throttle.

That is assuming you were on a closed road or track, as we don't condone speeding here!

I don't know why the manual says that. You can go 6 to 3 but just be careful about speed. 3 is for between 65 and 100mph, below that, go to 2nd. 1st is really only for 1-50ish so you only use it from a dead stop.

The C5Z will crush most anything from 65 to 100 in 3rd.

if you're going btw 60-75 and cruising in 5th or 6th, blip the throttle to match revs, put it in 3rd, then get on it. you'll have about 1.5-2k of revs smack in the sweet spot of the powerband (i'm assuming your car is stock). very few cars will hang with that roller coaster of a ride, guaranteed! have fun!

With out a doubt you could and should have down shifted more. Take it out and slowly accelerate at each gear. You will then know youre cars speed and rpm at each gear levell.

Here's a better one,I wouldn't have wasted my gas for their amusement anyway.I would have rolled down the window, pointed at the 405 badging and another finger at their car, laughed, and then shook my head.

I've got about 6 "kills" now

I think the most brutal one was a Mus-tank on the highway that wanted to go...so I dropped to 3rd and buried him. I slowed down to let him catch up and take another shot since he had been so confident...and he put both his hands up and then put on his turn signal and slid in behind me.

My foot. His neck. I am the Alpha Z.

Of course, as noted - we certainly don't condone this.

Sincerely, I do believe in taking it to the track...but sometimes, it needs to be done.

given how wicked fast these cars are in stock form, i could not imagine what it must be like to be in a modified/supercharged c5 z06 doing this 3rd gear downshift dance...

anybody been in a new c6 z06 and done this? if so, what's it like? meaningfully different?

Here's an even better one:

Street racing is dangerous and illegal.

Kill stories, or any posting about illegal, reckless and dangerous activities on any roadway, is not permitted at Corvetteforum.com.

Take it to the track.

No kill stories per the rules. Get it?
