Default Oil

Hey guys just picked up my 02 Z06, when i bring up the oil life it says 19%. Does the oil need to be changed? Or will an indicator come on that says "Change Oil Soon" Thanks!

Your DIC will tell you when you get to 5% remaining; it will say "Change Oil Soon". If you let it go to 0%, it will (should, IIRC) say "Change Oil Now".

Do you know when the last oil change was performed, and if so, whether it was synthetic or not? If you know when it was last changed, do you know if the oil-life monitor was reset?

Pull the dipstick and see what color the oil is, for starters. If it's clear and "new-looking", I'd guess it's been changed but the system not reset. If it's dark brown / black, I'd change it even if the DIC said 99% remaining.

Car regulates the percentage depending on how many start ups and driving conditions. The computer can read 20% for example and the previouse owner could hit the reset button then or at any time and it would start over at reading youre oil at 100% again even though it realy is not. Change the oil and keep track yourself. Safe and cheap piece of mind.

I would definitely have it changed, especially if you just got the car. With only 12K miles on an 02, it's entirely likely that the oil may have been in there for a couple years, if the P.O. only changed based on mileage.

There are too many questions about the oil for me to be comfortable with, so I'd change it without a thought!

With only 19% oil life remaining I'd change it too not knowing how old the oil is. Now if the oil was just changed 6 months ago you could let it go to near zero ... but it doesn't sound like you know what date the oil was changed last.

Are those polished OEM wheels or repros?
