Default convertible Zo6 ?

Just looking for clarification, I have been reading, looking, asking questions about the c-5 vettes. I am 3-6 months from making a purchase and during my dreaming session, I found a 04 convertible z06. I didnt think this was possible. Didn't the zo6 only come as a frc? I was looking for a way to tear down the vin#. 1G1YY12S245113708. but no luck. Should I suspect a clone here? and if indeed it does have the 405 hp motor and other performance z06 parts, how long will this car last under the mods?

First post, thanks in advance for your comments

No 'verts... no automatics either.

You'd have to run the engine numbers to see if it's a LS6 because it didn't come from the factory that way.. hence the vin is no good.

and somewhere here are several stickys about those little "known" issues over time. All in all, it will last well over 100k mi without major problems.. if taken care of.

Z06 is a FRC, or fixed roof coupe. Some convertibles do exist, they have been modified. Some Zs have been given removable tops as well, like the coupe. The VIN will tell you which engine came in the car...LS1 or LS6. You are looking at the 8th digit. S = LS6, G = LS1

1st - Country of Origin: 1 = USA
2nd - Manufacturer: G = General Motors
3rd - Make: 1 = Chevrolet
4th/5th - Carline/Series: YY = Corvette
6th - Body Style: 2 = two door coupe
7th - Restraint Code: 2 = Active, manual w/ driver and passenger inflatable restraints.
8th - Engine Type: G = LS1, S = LS6
9th - Check Digit
10th - Model Year
11th - Plant: 5 = Bowling Green, Kentucky
Last 6 digits Production Number starting with 100000 - 109707.

Looks like your VIN is a Z...

The FRC/Z06 body style is based on the convertible car, there are companies (such as Carravagio) who take the fixed roof off of the car and put the convertible top back in it's place. There a few cars here on the forum that have gone this route (do a search). I would find out who did the conversion, and ask on the forum about reputation etc. The VIN says that the car you are looking at did indeed start out life as a Z06.

so............one other question, with the added Zip with the 405 hp, will that cause any trouble with any body flex? or should I even worry about it and just buy it?

Plenty of verts have been modded to put out much more than the stock Z hp. The structure of the Z is the same as the vert, they just put a fixed roof on instead of the vert top. You will not have any stiffness problems. You could even add a tunnel support if you thought it flexed too much. I would just make sure the conversion was done right / or by the right people, whatever that takes if the car is at a dealership.

The Z is the convertible fram with the bracing of the coupe welded on, at least this is what I have been told. The roof really has no affect on the body flex as there are no structural components in it. It is just all basically the plastic hardtop for the convertible.
Good luck

hummm....I would try and find a convertable with the Z51 performance package and a six speed stick instead...add an exhaust and intake and you will have something close to a z06 convertable...thats a much better bet then risk taking a half-assed conversion job

Default loving mine.....

....i bought my 'verted z0 last july and have enjoyed every minute of ownership.

as others have already said, the "S" in the vin (8th character) is the dead giveaway. i would verify that the dash vin matches the frame vin (open the hood and look at the frame rail right behind the pass side headlight). you could also verify the 243 heads (# is cast on the front edge of the pass side).

if all that is good and the deal sounds liveable, then go for it.

the only downsides so far for me is i'm limited on track days (without a rollbar ) and then there are the "purists" and haters that swear that "it is NOT a true Z06 without the roof" to which i can only laugh and say "you're right, i guess i just have a fast 'vert"

either way, if different is your thing (like me), then a spirited drive in a 'verted z0 is .

you might check out ILLMAC77's 'verted z0. it is freakin' cool as hell .

keep me posted if you end up pulling the trigger.

peace and ,

rich

just curious....did yours start out as a z0, or did you just add the rear brake ducts and ti exhaust? i don't see the z0 logo on the headrests or fenders and i think i see foglights behind those front screens.

nice car either way,

No, its a plain C5 vert w/ the MN6. I couldn't bring myself to buy a Vette without any kind of removable top.

I added all the Z06 pieces. Exhaust, C6 Z shifter, screens, rail covers, rims, calipers, air box, rear brake ducts, etc etc.........

And being that isn't actually a legit Z06, I wouldn't put the badges on, that would be over the top.

Was going to buy the seats but I haven't found the right ones yet. I kinda like the seats it has in it better.

His conversion is flawless. He did it himself with some help from friends. I have seen it in person. PM him for the details. He knows all the ins and outs.
