An honest salesman is refreshing in this day and age. I could see how it could catch you totally off guard though...
Back to your original question...I doubt anyone keeps records of individual/home lift failures, but you might be able to research commercial lift failures through OSHA or your state equivalent.

I did see a post on a board a few years ago with a failed lift with another car parked under it. It was not a lifting failure but a storage failure. One corner of a 4-post lift released and that corner fell. It was reported to have been down on the safety latches but who knows for sure. Too bad I can't find it now though.

I think you are referring to the incident where another car ran into one of the posts. The lift was not secured to the floor.
