My 2001 Z06 was consuming about 6.5-7 quarts per 2500 miles. So my dealer changed rings to fix it. But still oil consumption is same. Now they are saying they have to do oil consumtion test i.e. after every 500 miles I have to take car to dealer and they will check oil level. After 4 tests they will decide what to do to fix this problem?
I would like to know ...
1. Has anyone faced this problem even after chainging rings??
2. What causes this execssive oil consumption??
3. How this problem can be fixed??
jay, sorry to hear your very bad news,,,,,,,,,,,,you, are unfortunately, not the only one this has happened to.
I would suggest getting in touch with the Better Business Bureau, Auto Divison........and see about what steps are neccessary to file a grievance against GM.
You need them to BUY BACK your car.........
The only other option for a fix, is a Short Block replacement.........
This, would be unacceptable to me, for a 50k auto........
Contact your GM Zone Manager................tell him/her you're intentions, and see if you get any results.
Many folks have had their LS1's & LS 6's bought back......it's not JUST a Z problem.
Good Luck.
Persistence is the key, and get ALL your documentation together that you have......... :yesnod:
I made a huge post with pictures a while back after they replaced my rings at 14K miles on the Z06. I had no trouble, until 2900 miles on the new rings - and the light came back on. I am going to do an oil change and see what happens ... I might have to file a grievance.
I think someone else has posted similar results after getting the rings replaced in that they are also consuming oil.
Definitely keep hammering GM on this issue cause if the "fix" isn't taking care of it, then they'll have to come up with a new "fix"... like a new engine ;)

My car has been steadily using a quart per 1000 for the past 7 or 8 thousand miles. I have not been convinced to let GM tear my car apart for new rings. Now with some of the re-ring jobs not solving the problem, I will continue to monitor my situation and hope it does not worsen as I am about to sail past the 10k mark.

PCV stands for "Positive Crankcase Ventilation". As you know, running an engine produces exhaust by-products. Most of these by-products go out the tail pipe as exhaust. However, some exhaust gasses get by the piston rings and go down into the crankcase/oil pan area.
Until the mid 1960's, the solution to the build-up of exhaust gases in the crankcase was to simply vent them to the atmosphere via a vent tube. With the advent of emission controls around 1968 or so, the solution was to tap into the intake manifold vacuum and literally suck the gases out of the crankcase. This positive crankcase ventilation system positively vents the crankcase gasses and routes them through the intake manifold, to be re-burned along with the normal fuel-air mixture.
A problem arises when oil control becomes an issue. Sucking the vapors out of the crankcase also tends to suck up oil droplets that are flying around in there, as the oil is buffeted by airflow created by reciprocation of the crank/pistons.
The solution here is two-fold: first, a seperator system, whereby the heavier oil droplets can settle out and be returned to the pan, while the crankcase gasses get passed into the intake and burned; second is the internal block porting that allows localized crankcase overpressures to be shunted back and forth between cylinder bays via the ports, rather than being directed down into the oil pan. The Z06 has an improved PCV system to accomodate the additional "oil load" created by its "higher-than-the-LS1" engine speeds.
I hope my information is accurate. Until I bought the Z06, my newest performance car was a 1970 Olds. I feel like I've stepped through a time warp and entered another world. A much better world!!!!
