Posted this in C5 Tech - wondering if I'll get any more response here. Noticed today a small spiderweb type crack in the paint on my hood. I then opened the hood and discovered the liner ripped in the same spot - is the hood hitting the coolant reservoir cap while I'm driving and causing this? Or did the hood get hit once by something on the outside and it happened? I'm afraid to keep driving the car since it will cause the hood to crack more.
Any ideas? If I can stop it from doing this any more, how much do you think a body shop will charge to fix this crack?
Yeah, it's pretty blurry. It's a spider-web looking crack about 1 1/4" in diameter. It appears to be done from the inside though, or perhaps something blunt since there is not chip on the outside at the center. I would agree that something got closed under the hood except I noticed it yesterday and the hood hasn't even been up for a week or so. Doesn't seem like I would have missed it for that long, but perhaps. Hard to see on this color.
The hood was probably closed once with something left in the engine compartment, the cap is just too low. One thing you can try is to get some modeling clay and put it on top of the cap. Then close the hood and see how much the clay gets compressed. This will tell you if anything is hitting the hood.
Ok, tried that with some Play-Doh. It's got about a 1/4" of clearance on the cap - hard to say whether the liner was interfering or not. It could be a little more than that before you get fiberglass to cap contact. Does that seem like enough?
why do you stick something to the liner and see where it hits (by the impresson it makes or if it leaves residue on anything) but it looks like something was left on top of something when the hood was shut. good luck

1/4" is more than enough. The hood would need extreme flexing to have hit the cap. Something must have been accidentally left on the fender area to have hit the hood, probably won't have any more problems.
