Have read the threads concerning this problem. My bone stock '04 CE (approximately 32K miles) got the dreaded "Service ABS, Service Active Handling, Service Traction System" message. The message comes on after driving a few miles. This has happened intermittently before, but now it consistently does it. The battery is about a year old. I'm about as mechanical as a rock, so my question is: If I take the car to the dealer, would it be covered under the extended warranty (not GM)? If they fix the problem, do they reset the codes? Any input is appreciated! Thanks, Don
I realize that you are not mechanically inclined - but it does at least help to understand the issue. I don't know what warranty product you have, but I would think that it would cover the EBCM if it merits replacement, again - depending on the codes.
Have you run the codes? If not and you don't know how - take a look at this Tech Tip -
Finally - the GM tech that performs the corrective action should reset the codes in the DIC, but if not - the tech tip I gave you covers how to do it yourself.
Honestly it costs $150 to get it fixed by absfixer.com. If you have no deductible i'd call the dealer to get a quote with the insurance first. You won't want be stuck with a $400 bill because the insurance thinks the repair is worth less than the dealer.
Check with your warranty company to see what is covered under the warranty and what isn't. If they say ABS components aren't covered then you will have to decide whether or not you want the dealer to do the repair. If you decide to go to a non-dealer shop be sure they have the equipment and knowledge to work on non-powertrain subsystems a fair number of them do not have the high priced test equipment required.
Thanks for the information and opinions. Will let you know the outcome when I make a decision on what route to take. I appreciate your expertise and willingness to share. This forum has a great membership! Thanks again, Don
Thanks for the offer Allzwell. I followed the instructions for finding out the codes and came out empty-handed! All I could come up with was the options menu. I truly am mechanically (and apparently computer) impaired!!! So, its off to the dealership this week. I'll have to make a decision then, depending on if the problem is covered by the warranty or not. I'll post the results soon. Thanks again for all of the advice and help.
PS Allzwell, I remember (having grown up in Houston) when Pearland was just a sleepy, small town. What a transformation has occurred. You're now in "Boom City"!

I'll PM you my cell number and I'll help you get your codes.
Problem resolved! Took the car to the dealership I purchased it (and warranty) from last Tuesday. It took two days for the repair as they had to wait for parts. No big deal, because they provided a rent car that was covered under the warranty.
