Default Next Mod?

My Vette is a 2003 C5 6speed with LT headers ,CAI,catback and tuned.355 RWHP. I was thinking a small cam or 390/410 gears.Undecided on which way to go.Does a cam with stock heads make sense? Will 390's over 3.42's be worth while? Opinions please.

Cam with stock heads works great. Just don't go nuts with the choice of cam. I went back to a 224/230 and love it. But I also did 4:10's early on. Get both.

A small cam will be fine with your stock heads. Although gears would be great, I averaged 31.7 mpg on my way to work this morning. I'm sure you will see a difference with 3.90's and won't have to go to 4.10's to notice.

i am exactly where you are right now.
i plan to go with a cam. from what i am reading heads and a cam are fine to really step up in HP but if you just want to go a little more then the cam is what you want.

I'd probably go with the cam first.

Hey Larry,

I was pondering the same recently.

Spoke to Billy @ TTP and bounced a few ideas off him. He suggested a 2800 stall and 3.42's over the cam. Says that will give the biggest SOTP improvement for the money.

I havent done it yet, b/c I want to drive a car with this setup to make sure it's for me first. Never drove a stalled car b4.

My rational side keeps kicking in too and saying the car does 0-60 in 4.42 sec's aint that fast enuff?

Lemme think about it...

My .02 Cam, you can still get 40-45 hp with a cam swap and the car will sound incredibly different.

Larry: Go with the cam. You wont be sorry. I have some "smaller" cams in the 22x/23x range that you can come sit in, hear, smell, taste, feel etc... You'll put the new found power to good use, i have faith... although 99TRFRC has a good idea with the procharger kit...

Al: I recommended a converter w/ 2800 stall and gears for you b/c your an auto with future intentions of doing a cam. stock gears and stock converter/stall will not jive too well with a cam.

If you get the stall and gears you better get some really grippy tires to even think about putting them to good use. You will light up the tires with ease. If you are worried about 0-60 times, then definitely get the stall and gears. You won't see as big of a drop in your 0-60 with just a cam as compared with just the stall/gears/tires. I bet you could go close to sub 4.0 second 0-60. The cam will really shine from 40 mph and up. Now do all of those mods at once, and then you're really talkin about some quick 0-60 times.
