Default Blackwing Questions

I tried the search and read all the past threads but couldn't find the answers to my simple questions..When does the Blackwing need to be cleaned? (mileage wise)and where to oil it? It looks relatively clean with some debris on there which I cleared.Does it need to be cleaned every 3K miles with the oil change?

It really depends on the environment you are driving in. Normally I would say no. There is an indicator on the top of the Blackwing that tells you when to clean it. Don't you believe it? Also why are you changing your oil at 3k your cars computer will also tell you when to change the oil. Don't you believe that either?

Wow that's unusual most people get twice that or more. Does your Blackwing look dirty? What does the indicator say? Unless you drive in a dusty dirty environment I wouldn't think it would be dirty. I should think you should be able to go at least 10k before cleaning.

From what I'm reading the consensus is that 10K sounds like the norm..the indicator still shows green so I'm assuming its going to turn another color when its ready..also.I keep reading about "oiling the filter" but no specifics...how is this applied?

Do you have the kit that includes the cleaner and the oil? If not you should pic one up. They go for about $15 plus shipping. The filter material for the Blackwing is a synthetic, not the same as the K & N cotton gauze. I have the kit but I have heard of other people cleaning it with the cleaner "Simple Green" When you oil it, I have heard of people using mineral oil and alcohol but I don't think I would take a chance with the oil, just get the kit from SLP performance. There are generics that will work also you could use the "blue" oil from sbfilters.com. When you oil the filter you spray it on. You want to get a nice even coat on all the material, but you do not want to get too much oil on it or it will throw some codes and you will get a "check engine" light because you will get oil on the MAF sensor. I know because I did this the first time I oiled mine.

Lift your hood, crouch down in front of car and look at filter housing just right of center. Gauge sits on top of housing and has indications of green, yellow and red. Can't miss it.

Unless SLP has changed their vendor, S&B FILTERS does supply the blue oil for the "Blackwing".
Personally, I never trust those little plastic "gauges". It shouldn't be hard to determine if your filter is dirty. Otherwise, just make a routine of cleaning the filter with every other oil/filter change...approx. 8-10,000 miles is my routine.
However, S&B usually provides a small measured syringe to apply the correct amount of oil to the clean and dry synthetic media. You apply the oil with the syringe to the pleats and allow it to completely wick through the media before re-installing the filter assembly.

The aerosol oil (ala K&N) tends to be overused by owners, which causes possible contamination of the MAF.

I reoil mine once a year. I clean it with Simple Green and water with a soft brush. I reoil with a mixture of mineral oil and alcohol in a spray bottle. By the way you can go 10,000 to 15,000 mile with synthetic oil between oil changes unless you just like throwing money away.

Ok thanks with the "where and when to oil" tip...and also the synthetic oil change as well...I never used synthetic before so the longer change periods are a big relief to me..and my wallet.

Ordered my SLP kit from Zips on the forum. They are less expensive than the catalogs.
