Is it Hard to remove my Pup Cats without going with long tube headers. Does anyone know what is involved. I'm thinking that with my Magnaflow exhaust and x-pipe that it might be less expensive and the results pretty close to what I want. Alittle boost in hp and a more agressive exhaust note. Thanks VNVETT
VNVETT, In order to go to LT's you have to remove the PUPS, you can use the B & B Shorties, and keep them intact......which due to NEW EPA regulations I suggest you do.
Taking them off is easy, replacing them to get a safety inspection is not appealing.........
Just go with the '02 y pipe...eliminating the pups...I did it on my '01 MY Vert with no problem. I also added the LS6 exhaust manifolds and piced up an almost new set of stock Z06 Ti' cat backs...total cost was under $400.
A nice bump in power coupled with the '02 Z06 stock air box. Fubu/Les :yesnod:
Thanks Z06ls6 but what I was asking about is removing the pup cats and replacing them with pipes welded in their place and keeping my stock exhaust headers. Here in Georgia I don't have to worry about inspections. Any ideas? Thanks VNVETT
RPO, from my '02 Z06...but you can order the units from your GM parts dealer...we know each other ;) ....I also had a rare SW Z06/Mod Red....like yours...it was a beauty...go and check out a pic of it... ;) Fubu/Les
VNVETT, you do now.............as of the first of jan '02, the emissions laws for visuals, and PCM checking are MANDATORY........for all states, so look before you leap...........
Thanks for the info Z06LS6, Maybe using a stock 02 y-pipe I can pass a visual. Hooked up to a machine I'm sure it would pass the emission test. What do you think? The inspectors proballly would not know that pups are supposed to be on it. I hope VNVETT
VN, as long as the main cats are in place it will almost assuredly pass the sniffer.............
The visuals is another story,,,
It just depends on WHO is doing the testing...........with fines of up to $2,500.00, and the inspection station at risk of losing their license......I think things may get sticky...............YOU also may be fined for removal.......SERIOUS bread here.....EPA don't you just luv em'??.
At least with PUPS removed, if you save them, you can re-install and be good to go........
The reason the 01 even has pup cats was because of a catalyst light-off problem caused by the distance of the main cats from the exhaust manifold. When the engine was cold, the main cats took a long time to start doing their thing. The addition of pup cats transferred exhaust heat further down stream in the exhaust system allowing the main cats to light off quicker and give better cold engine emission performance. Once the engine is warmed up, you should still pass any emissions tests even with the pups removed. The 02 model has redesigned cats and was able to get by without the restrictive pups.
I had my pre- cats removed and the muffler shop put in a costum x-pipe and replaced the main cats with high flow units. That was worth about 11 ponies and 10 Tq at the wheels.
I've had no problem with the "service engine" light. They dod a pretty good job.
Well today I went to a friends muffler shop and we took my exhaust system off and cut the pre cats off and welded in new pipe put the system back on checked for leaks and was finished in about 1.5 hrs. The sound is more aggressive especially with my magnafow system and x-pipe and the real difference is in the throttle response and extra power you immediately feel when you nail it in first or second. I can't believe the difference. No codes and a nice increase in power and looking at it if you didn't know better you would not be able to tell that they were ever on there from the factory. I did this after calling the dealer and being told $1100.00 and you have to by it all just to get the y-pipe. Total cost---$49.95. Happy with the results. Thanks for everybodys help. VNVETT
VNVETT: which X-pipe do you have? Is it magnaflow as well?? I was also told about the $1100 pricetag on the '02 system. Guess you have to be GOOD friends  with a muffler shop to do this tho....the average shop will laugh you out the door I am sure. Thanks for the info....
racingfast, Yes it is the x-pipe that came with the magnaflow system. You can get the x-pipe seperate or you can order the whole system from LAPD. I listen to a lot of aftermarket systems before I bought the Magnaflow. I decided on it because it had a deeper "rumble" to it more like a V-8 should sound. I had B&B PRT's on my 98 and they were okay but most of the systems I have heard have a bumblebee sound and not as deep as I wanted. It was a good price I have to admit. It pays to have friends in the business and get these little favors. Take care, VNVETT

I've been saying this for months. Everyone thought I was nuts! The 01's-up have decent manifolds. Some guys only got 7 hp from LT headers. Forget the $1200 and try it-especially for $49  :D
