Default Vararam has a wrong filter?

Hi Everyone, I bought my car a few months back and want to take care of it. I had an oil change done and figured it would be a great time to clean the air filter. I was surprised to find this filter in the Vararam housing. Is this a Vararam filter, or is this some home made unit. I hate to what think this home made part has been doing to the engine for the last 50,000 miles. I can only imagine the damage done from all the dirt this car has swallowed.

I am only asking because on Vararams website the filter is corrugated and green, this is flat and generic black foam with a mesh backing. Could anyone please specify a proper filter for me and which one of our vender's sells them.

On a side note, does anyone recognize the MAF sensor? I am trying to piece together the mods done by the previous owner.

Thank you VERY much for all your help.

That filter was on the first Vararam model for the C5. Unfortunately it looks like the previous owner probably did not know that Vararam has changed the design of the top part of the unit, including the filter. I suggest you contact Steve at Vararam and see what they can do for you. They really are a group of stand up guys and their product is just awesome, i am sure you will notice the difference after you replace this one.

This is their phone number: 1-866-507-2648

That filter was also on the Vararam B-2.
It is still on my '01Vert. I clean it and re-oil annually.
I have the replacement cloth filter, but I ascribe to the motto.."if it aint broke don't fix it.
when the foam Vararam filter starts to degrade I'll replace it with the cloth one...

I have just under 120 k smiles on the Vert... and it is running stong...

I have a B-2 as well, and it has the filter pictured above. I will eventually change to the green filter. (When I have some extra $$$)

Thank you very much for your help everyone. It is good to know that this is an actual filter and not something somebody made. Whew! I will have this one cleaned and oiled and talk to Steve at Vararam. THANKS.

BTW, anyone recognize the MAF? Is it stock or after market?

When I had my Trans am back in 99-03, I went through a number of MAF's. To me, that looks like a GMS MAF. Are there any markings on it anywhere?

As far as I know, the MAF should be old, like in the range of 2000-2003 I assume from what the owner told me about when he modded the car if he did it while under warranty or just after the car came off warranty.

Second question everyone always asks is what is the HP increase of this unit? Just so I can brag a bit more to my buddies.

This is all I could find for markings.

Thanks for the help once again!

New cotton filter and Vararam top on way from Steve at Vararam. I was just going to use the old filter but found it was torn along the side. The guys at Vararam are awesome and got me the new filter and top on the way right away for a very reasonable price. Great support! Thank you everyone for your help.
