I can tell you that I've had a couple (except the valentine 1). My latest one was the passport 9500i with GPS tech. I have come to 1 conclusion, they all suck *****. I experienced the same thing with all, they do warn you, but what good is it if they warn you and you can see the COP 1/4 mile up the road?
Chances are, if you can see him, he can see you and clock you with ease. I experienced this with multiple different radars and they all behaved the same. The only way to avoid tickets is to stay as close as possible to the speed limit. In conclusion, I'd say, save your money and use it for something else.
The radar of choice around here seems to be the Valentine1. Which is a good choice! I on the other hand like Beltronics radar detectors. Have used them for the past 15 years or so. They have never let me down! The RX-65 works great for me. I don't look for arrows telling me where the radar is coming from. I don't have to remember different tones for X band, K band, KA band etc. The detector says if it's KA band or whatever band it is. So for example if the radar detector beeps and says KA band, I check my speed, I never actually look at the detector. Pretty simple, it has warned me of many speed traps around the bend, over the hill etc. It just works for me! I liked the RX65 so well that I bought another for my Jeep. Then I decided to move up to a concealed RX75 detector in the vette. They work or at the very least remind me to check my speed.
Valentine 1, passenger visor bracket with invisacord powered thru the mirror. a sweet set up. it got a workout last week on the trip to Bowling Green, it pickup one radar at 3 miles
I own both the V1 and the Escort and theirs not 0.02 difference between them. I've actually ran both units at the same time on a cross country trip and what I found out was that both units work well. The V1 does have the arrows and you have to decide if that's important to you. My thing is if it beeps I check up....
I like the V1's arrows. If there is a threat, you know which way to look for it. I also like the different beeps it has for each band. I get so many K band beeps that I don't pay them much attention. I know they are probably cops, but in my area the cops keep their radars on.
The state troopers in my area are a different story. They must be instructed to only use instant on, because I have never seen a trooper with his in steady on mode. They run Ka band, and I will always get the little "brap brap" or whatever the noise is, and I'll start hunting. It's kind of fun trying to find them. I hit one the other day going into a big city and I finally spotted him about a mile from where the detector first went off.
Another time I had a trooper trailing me about 1 or 2 cars back and all the sudden this mustang came over the top of the hill we were headed up. He was coming / speeding the other direction (towards us - 2 lane road) and as soon as he came into view the trooper nailed him with radar. My V1 flipped out and he was done. He never had a chance. The trooper turned on the blue lights.

Here we go again!! It’s kind of the ford vs. Chevy thing for electronics.
Buy a top tier detector (8500, Valintine, etc.) and use it religiously and you will be just fine. I have an 8500 and love it, some prefer other detectors. My daily driver has an older Bel ($45 fleabay special) and it has warned me about a trap that would have nabbed me every week; I’ve never felt under protected with it.
