5 of us ( 2 C6's, 2 C5's & 1 C2 )from Iowa are headed for Arizona this Friday afternoon, expecting to be in Holbrook Sunday evening. Monday afternoon we head for Bondurant's Driving School for a fun afternoon of instruction. Tuesday we are headed for Oatman area and then Wednesday slowly head east along Route 66 until we hit Missouri Saturday night and then Sunday head for home.
We have several areas we want to stop and check out ...... for you folks that have been there ..... is there anything we shouldn't miss while we're there?
We know a week isn't enough, but we can always return another day.
Verna and I did Rt 66 in 2004 in our 77. From Chicago to LA. Our total trip was over 7000 miles. There is really quite a lot to see and it will drive you crazy to try and see everything. Best advice is relax and enjoy. We stayed at the Wigwams, Stopped in Seligman to go to the Sno Cap. If you go there stop at the Barbershop talk to the owner. He is in charge of the Route 6 preservation. Hungry??? Got to stop at the Big Texan in Amarillo. Just before that is the Cadillac Ranch. Get out and sign the cars. The lady that owns the gift shop in Winslow Arizona shipped our dirty clothes back to Michigan for us. Don't forget to bring carrots for the mules in Oatman. And leave a dollar bill on the wall at the bar. If you make itto Williams AZ there is a great pie place. It is a great trip an I hope to make it again someday. Hope this has been some help. How far east are you planning to go? If you liked the movie cars the owner of the Blue Swallow Motel was the basis for the VW bus character and Fran from the Point Cafe in Adrian TX was the waitress. Write soon
If you guys only have a week, you are going to be hauling a$$. Don't even bother with anything in Pheonix. Try to make it to Prescott, Jerome, Sedona or Tombstone. Nothing going on in Oatman except the burros. good luck and SAFE DRIVING!!!!
Wishing you great weather and smooth highways on the trip!
Weather forcast for the Phoenix area is sunny as usual. Gonna be a little warm though, 104 is forcasted for Saturday, but it's a dry heat! . Don't forget the t-shirts and shorts!
I'm a little old school (alot really), just purchased a digital camera ( been using 35mm disposables for years ) a few weeks ago ........ figuring out how to use took a little while. Then the other issue I just figured out was the size of the memory card, borrowed a couple from up to date tech buddy ............. I'm set for over 2,500 pics.
Thank-you for any traveling info ...............................
Have a great trip. It will be one of the fastest weeks you will ever experience. You will want to go back and see all you missed. Verna and I hope to return soon for another trip down Route 66. This year she bought me a subscription to Route 66 magazine.
drop down from Flagstaff to Sedona
Good road and nice scenery
I believe there's still a lot of road construction going on in Sedona...along with snowbirds/tourists in their imports.
The winding road from Cottonwood/Clarkdale/Jerome (SR89A) into Prescott Valley is a scenic and challenging road. You'll see the red rocks of the Verde Valley/Sedona and tall mature pines of the Mingus Mountains as you drop from 7,000 ft elevation to about 5,200 ft elevation.

Holbrook...Close to Petrified Forest.... Sedona is beautiful...Stay away from Schebly Hill in a Vette. As Hotwheels said..take 89A instead of Hwy17 thru Phx...Nice mtn. drive thru Strawberry and Payson. Maybe 20 or so miles south of Sedona on Hwy17.
