The gear selector indicator for my A4 trans moves between gears to easily. Example: In "D" it will move to "N" and yet still be in gear. (The red indicator will be half way in "N" and half way in "D". Like wise for the rest of the gears.) The same is true between gears 1, 2 & 3. To place it in "R" from "N" I have to nudge it pass "R" and bring it back to "R" to get it to engage.
It's becoming an annoyance and is starting to worry me. Am I looking at a major problem or is it just an adjustment?
I think your gear selector is just worn out. Good news.......they are not too bad to replace. I spent about 2-3 hrs on it and that was reading and learning as I went. Used shifter assembly...$40 New ?? I think they were in the $150 range.
Mine broke the other day. Take the shifter off and the clear top w/ the "range" display pops off. Pull out the orange indicator and you'll see its in 2 pieces.
I fixed my by melting the plastic back together w/ a soldering iron. Put it back together and it works fine
Ok, I need to be clear about this. What is the "gear selector/shift indicator"? The parts dept was, DUH! Do I need to take the console off to replace it or is there a way to remove the piece without removing the console cover?
I went to the dealer this morning to get an "opinion". One mechanic (not the dealer's corvette specialist) said it could be the gear selector indicator or the cable just needed to be adjusted. He said either way the console would need to be removed. What does he know...?

Oh, and yes it still lights up.
The gear selector/shift indicator are the letters next to the shifter on the left. P R N D 3 2 1. Yes, you do have to take the console off. Check this web site for the console removal, and yes the car in the pic is a manual car, but you get the idea.

I went to meet the guys from the Corvette Club of Hawaii this morning for breakfast followed by a ride around the island.
When we got ready to motor out my car wouldn't move. Ok guys; it appears the cable from the shifter to the transaxle gave up the ghost. AAA to the rescue. Flat-bedded the car to my dealer (the tow truck driver did an excellant job of getting the vette on/off the bed. I gave him a nice "tip".) They'll check it out Monday and call me to pick up a loaner.
Let's all pray it's just the cable. More to follow.
Your shift control unit also has a theft deterrent system in it. It is a cylinoid that wont let you move your gear selector out of park. Sometimes they get weak and can jam or fail to release. Before I replaced mine I would occasionally have to be patient and hold the shift button down for a few extra seconds. I would hear the cylinoid click and off I would go. GM parts direct is a good place to research the complete unit.
If your not a hands on guy let someone fix it for you, but I'll bet the dealer will soak you for over $500 for this repair. At least try to find a good NON-DEALER mechanic . Ask the members at your club who they use.
If your patient and can follow directions you can save a few bucks doing this yourself.
I just replaced my cable two weeks ago. Car wouldn't start, was troubleshooting battery etc and inadvertantly found the problem by leaning against the back of the car and it rolled while in park. Took about 3 hours (don't have a lift, just ramps). Cable was around 80 bucks. One of other guys on the forum, Patches, was gracious enough to send me some instructions, if you need them pm me.

That sound like my problem. The shifter moves freely without any trouble between the gears, except Park. When in Park it stay there until I depress the botton. YET, the car can be moved while still in park. Oh, the cars starts while in Park. Thanks for the offer of the instructions. My service writer (a good friend by now...) printed out the instructions. I have no room in my garage or ramps OR the inclination to fix it myself. I'll let the dealer handle it. If it is the cable, it should be the cost of the part (discounted) and no more than 2 hrs labor.
