The last couple times I drove my Vette, a VERY LOUD rattle developed, soundling like it was coming from directly behind the driver's seat. It was so consistent and loud that I was actually NOT worried about finding it, since it occurred even on the slightest bumps. Sounded to me like suspension. So I got it up yesterday and sure enough, one of the ears (the one toward the rear) on the top shock mount had sheared off! The ear was still bolted to the chassis, and the top of the shock was half loose.
There must've been a hairline crack or something from the factory, as the car has ridiculously low miles and I've never hit any serious bumps.
The only good thing was, as I suspected, the rattle was pretty easy to find; as soon as I pulled the wheel, there it was.
Anybody hear of a rear shock failing like that? I was a bit surprised to actually see "Made in U.S.A." on the shock.
Long ago, I had a VW Scriocco, '82, anyway, had Midas put in some new struts. Two days later, the left front wheel was bottoming out. Took it back to them knowing full well the strut was bad. They complained all over the place saying it couldn't happen and it must be something else wrong. But, I won the day and they pulled it. The shaft was busted inside. No leaking either.
