Looking to change out my rear end fluid and I'd prefer to stick with GM oil. Does the stuff from GM already have the limited slip additive in it, or do I need to purchase it seperate? If so, how much of it do I add to the fluid?
Is there a good reason to stick with GM? IMHO, Red Line 75W90 hypoid gear oil is the best stuff for the differential. It already contains the limited slip modifiers that you need, it has a very high resistence to temperature break down, and reduces friction in the gear box. It is a full synthetic, and exceeds all GM specs. Some folks have used Amsoil or one of the others, but I like the Red Line stuff myself.
Travis,
The new DEXRON® LS Gear Oil 75W-90, P/N 88862624 has the limited slip modifier in it. Note that this fluid isn't specified in our owner's manual as it didn't exist until about a year ago.
I had Amsoil in Zo6.... ran great... then had the transmission rebuilt/ new clutch installed.
The shop ended up putting in GM fluid for the diff, I guess without the additive, and now after about 2k miles....right when I start moving forward and engage the gears lightly or when I go to reverse into the garage I can hear the lightest "popping" as the diff engages in either direction.
I had the same issue on my '02 Firehawk until I put a bottle of GM additive in (which fixed the popping)- but this time around in the 'Vette I'm just going to drain it all and put Amsoil back in.
