Was starting to notice a little grind in 3rd. Didnt think to much of it the Z was pretty new to me. Maybe i was clutching a little late doing something wrong. Well no that wasnt the case. Clutch wont ingage or disingage in any way I would feel safe driving it. Guess I'm done till spring

The transmissions in these things are crap. They are the weak link of the car. They usually fail because of the weak 3-4 shift fork or the flimsy stamped steel synchro keys. This would have been relatively cheap to remedy at production, but GM cheaped out and is collectively costing vette owners hundreds of thousands for out of warranty repairs. Even if a tranny was repaired within warranty these sh!^ parts were put back in and will eventually have to be replaced again
10-4 on that. My trans lasted 15,000 VERY easy miles and that is exactly what happened, the 3-4 syncro locked the trans in 4th and the car had to be rollbacked to the dealer. Extended warranty repair but now when I hammer on it, that's always in the back of my mind.
Anybody see the latest issue of Vette and the C6 when they were gonna photograph a burnout and the rear end exploded and trashed the mainshaft of the tranny too? What are they making these things out of???
I have the same problem with my '01 Z. Any direction for where to have this fixed...ie. dealer maint. or should I go to an outside shop. Also any words on what to tell the mechanics specifically so they can fix the problem? Estimated cost to fix this problem? Thanks!
Mines going to RPM in Indy watched them do a trans once those guys are amazing. Think they said around 2500 but with the econmy falling apart gotta watch what im spending.
Just checked RPM and looks like they have a good product with the Level 5 tranny. Anyone ever changed one themselves?....changed my old '79 vette before, but don't know about the C5 Z.

I had the exact same thing happen to me except I was out of warrenty. With me removing the tranny myself and dropping it off with new billet shift keys, steel fork and bronze pads it still cost me $1900 for parts and labor. Needed a new 3rd gear and synchros also.

I changed mine myself. It's not that hard getting it out just a lot of work and if you have a few buddys to help makes it a lot easier! I think I might even have the step by step on removale still.
133,000 miles, 7 years, many track hourse, zero repairs, and zero clutch replacements later, mine's working flawlessly.
You're such a party pooper. Besides track hourse are easier on the drivetrain components than track hours.
To the OP, I had to rebuild mine too. You can have any competant tranny shop do the work as long as they install solid synchro keys, a steel 3-4 shift fork, and bronze fork pads.

I did mine about a month ago. Not terribly difficult. I made a tool that I posted about here to compress the leaf spring for removal, but several here have said you can do it with a couple of jacks. Make sure you have the special tools that work for fuel and a/c fittings to use for the hydraulic clutch line. Make sure you get the aluminum ones... not the plastic ones. Having the factory manual saves a lot of brain damage trying to figure out what you need to do next, but real men never use manuals, do they?
I had a general tramsmission shop do mine. I saw a 'Vette in there once before.
The front bushing in the torque tube failed and it killed the clutch's disk when it failed during an aggressive shift at 6,500 rpm.
I got a new clutch, torque tube bushing, new slave cylinder, new fuel filter and I had them rebuild the gearbox since the 2nd gear syncro was weak, also I had them reseal the sides of the differential since there was a minor leak on the driver's side....
In total they charged $3,700.
They manager to rip me off badly at first by charging $5,400..... I had some words with the owner of the shop and then it was corrected to the final price.
They would only install factory parts, so I wasn't allowed to give them billit keys, bronze pads, etc...... but the steel shift fork a Tremec upgrade so they did install one of those..
