Gasoline Odor
OK guys, For the past couple of fill ups I have noticed a very strong gas odor eminating for the area around the gas cap ( and yes I have checked the cap repeatedly) I have never had this problem before and I haven't changed my fueling procedures or habbits.
The only change I have made to the car is the addition of a smooth air coupler.
I had the same problem. I tried a new fuel cap but that didn't help. So I took it to the dealer(Still had the extended warranty) and had them check it out. They said that there was a bad seal on the tube that connects the two fuel tanks. They replaced the seal but it was still leaking. They ended up replacing the left side fuel tank. Just picked it up from the dealer yesterday and no odors yet. Had it not been under warranty the repair would have been about $1700. I have a 04 vert with 35000 miles.
I had the same situation a couple of years ago.... it turned out that the gas filter (which is located in the back of the vehicle, nested near and slightly above the tail pipes) was leaking... it was a bitch to locate a replacement part. Give it a look, and don't drag your feet on this, if it is the gas filter it won;t get any better... just worse ! (Your mileage will be severely affected as well) Good luck.
I just had my wifes Fuel filter replaced on Monday morning at Corvette Paramedics in Mount Holley, NJ. Started out as an odor, then it started to leak.
97 & 98 filters have a tendency to leak. ( bad design ) It was corrected in the 99 and up models, although you cannot use the newwer filters on the 97/98 models.
The job takes about a 1/2 hour with a lift, without one forget it. Looks like you have to be a contortionist to do the job.

OK,
I took a look and there appears to be some sort of leak on the driver's side. Has anyone had this problem? I was hoping to get some information on what would be involved in geting to the crossover tube. Kinda tight comming from the bottom side.

Thanks!!!
Are you certain it's not the filter? The filter is on the driver's side.

My filter is in the tank and not external. They evidently made changes in the 04 run to get ready for the C-6. I will probably have to drop the tanks to get at the problem (I think???)
I will aslo be checking the codes and having a look at the canister once I get the shields off and the exaust dropped.

Ahhh -- I see. I didn't realize it was different. Mine is an '01 and the filter is external (visible just forward of the driver's side rear wheel if the car is jacked up). Sorry.
