Default Kinda stupid tail light question

Ok... so I am looking at my Z06 and the tail lights have those louvered covers.... a couple questions...

1) the 3rd brake light has a cover on it and looks like it was attached via adhesive, so I'm guessing I should just be able to use some fishing line to get it off... does that sound right?

2) The tail lights themselves have screws. Did those normally come with a set of screws that are longer?? I've not messed with them yet, but I'm guessing I'm going to need to go get some new screws for the tail lights that are shorter...

Any info would be appreciated.

Not a fan of the covers, so want the car to be nice and stock looking.

you are right on the 3rd brake light - they are usually held on with double sided tape. You may want to use a hairdryer to heat up the adhesive to make it easier to pull off.

The louvers sometimes do come with longer screws, so I would suggest pulling them off then trying them to see if they still hold the taillights firmly without the louvers - if not, off to Ace hardware...

Hi AverageVetteNut -

The factory bolts are t15 torx with a black finish - and they are plenty long so there is a good chance that the installed may have used the factory hardware.

However, you could just screw longer bolts in further as there is nothing in the way to bottom them out (within reason of course.)

best regards-

If it was me, I'd just use a hair dryer to heat up the third brake light. Start at the right or left edge and pull up to remove it. It's held in place with double sided tape. Use a fishing line if you are afraid of breaking the piece. On the tail lights, just remove the screws and take off the louvers. You can use the same screws, there is a lot of room back there. An extra 1/4" in length of the screw isn't going to hurt anything.

Thanks guys.... the screws aren't the torx, but just phillips head screws....

Now that I know there's nothing back there, I'll just pull them and re-use them for now.

Thanks for the tips on the 3rd light as well.... that's a big help.

Now to get rid of the ugly shorty antennae
