Default Goo Gone Mishap.........

I was cleaning up my car for a car show and had a spot on my ashtray cover from a velcro tape I had removed and was preparing to clean it off with Goo Gone...........I spilled a small amount on the console and tried to wipe it up quickly but too late......the more I wiped I noticed the protective coating on the console was peeling up as I wiped. Not sure what the coating is but now have a mess, anybody know if I remove the console and clean the rest off what is the prouct they use on this? I know it cuts the glare because the sopts where it came off is very shiny. Maybe now a good time to go with the painted versions. Looks like a no-show for the car show as I'm now too sick to go.............the stock market crash and now this...........not my week.

that sucks man...... but just doesn't equate to the decline of the market. I've found many interior pieces don't take well to solvents

Wow. I've used Goo Gone on a lot of stuff without issue. Good luck with the fix.

Everytime I use Goo-Gone I swear there's gasoline in it. but it does a hell of a job getting gumming stuff off.

I've used it for years with no problem and that is the reason I posted the thread. I didn't know the coating was even on the console and once the Goo Gone got on it, it started to peel and and is like a satin rubbery substance. I can take the piece out and finish taking the rest off but don't know what they used as it doesn't appear to be a clear coat............anyone out there know what the protective coating is?

I did a quick search and found that the thread and info listed below maybe the stock look you might be after.

Hope this helps.

Goo Gone has powerful solvents...I think I recall xylene and toluene make up part of the formula...these 2 will damage (dissolve) painted surfaces...I wouldn't go near my C5 with it!!!!

Nasty stuff. I tried using it on the door sill panels to remove scuff marks and melted the plastic. WD 40 works well for sticky gummy stuff like velcro and stickers.

I use denatured alcohol for that sort of thing.........haven't damaged any type of surface yet If I'm not sure, I try it on a very small surface first though.

PETROLEUM NAPHTHA and CITRUS OIL are the 2 ingredients in GooGone.
Naphtha is also known as White Gas or Coleman lantern fuel. Add a bit of citrus oil to hide the odor and slow the evaporation rate and you have GooGone (and a few less $ in your wallet).

Don't need a gallon? Cig lighter fluid is Naphtha, and it comes in a handy dispenser can.

I have used it for many years and never had a woops with it.
