Is it me or does the tach sweep kinda slow. Had the Z out for a nice ride yesterday. Came through an on-ramp, no one around, third gear, mash the fun pedal. Never have gone for a right at the red line 6600 shift, so I figure I'll do that. Look down, at about 5800, figure I've got about another half second before I have to shift, then BLAHHHHHHH. Limiter. Stick in 4th, hang head in shame, decelerate to 85 and put in 6th. :smash:
Re: Finally bounced off rev-limiter (Black2001Z06)
Leaving the dealership, daily when pulling out of my driveway, on the golf course fairway, at the DMV while taking my drivers test and when dropping my son off at kindergarten... It does spin up quite fast - the tach does not seem to be able to keep up. :smash:
Re: Finally bounced off rev-limiter (J Lance Miller)
Yes, the tach sucks. The sweep on it is very slow and not very dependable 1st gear seem to be the worst, since usually that is where I will have the quickest acceleration. It is more reliable in 2nd and 3rd since the tach is climbing at a slower rate.. I have seen readings anywhere from 5800 - 6400 and I am on the rev limiter, but other times it is right on the money. But many times, the tach obviously isn't even close. I have thought of installing a small shift light somewhere to help out. But, I am pretty close to having the feel of the motor and I rarely bang the rev limiter now and I pretty much shift by ear at this point.
I bounced off mine the first time as I was leaving the dealership. I had flown in to pick the car up and hadn't test drove it. So I signed the paperwork pulled out on the street and dropped the hammer. Then I had a big silly grin on my face for the next 14 hrs home.
Re: Finally bounced off rev-limiter (speedy-gonzalez)
Nice to see I'm not the only one! I really figured I had time to make the shift in 3rd..like most folks said, you get a pretty quick spin up in 1st and 2nd. I figured it's just getting it's legs in third. Funny thing was when I made the shift into 4th and finally looked down (usually shift by ear anyway), I was well over 110...seems like it took oh about 4 seconds to get there from the time I stood on the fun pedal.
Re: Finally bounced off rev-limiter (Black2001Z06)
Ever considered installing a shift indicator? I've considered this after realizing how important those last few revs are in quarter mile times. Anyone got ideas on where and what shift indicator to buy?
I know Autometer has a shift light included in many of their tachs, but I'm not sure you could buy a stand alone shift light. I would think it would be pretty easy to do...you find the trigger signal for the coil packs, have some sort of external computer to set the light and then mount the light. I'd think you'd want the light somewhere directly in your line of sight...say on the door pillar, top of windshield, rear view mirror? I don't drag the car, so for me, going all the way to red-line is a rare event, but I can see the value.
