WELL i got a call from the service manager after i dropped car off this morning. he said that their are no codes in the system. it also has not displayed the service lock system while they checked it. and to my surprise he says since their are no codes they cannot and will not remove the lockplate and install k harness. WTF is this?
i'm picking my car up in 30 minutes and will install the clb when it arrives later this week. i will then call the other 2 gm dealers to see if they can remove the lockplate even without a code. am i missing something here. was this not a recall???

They did you a favor. Install the CLB and keep it away from the dealer. Who knows what they'll put in the car if you give it to them.
The harness was a recall but not the lock actuator, but they recall was closed as of like january 08 i think they said so they wont do anything for it anymore... and they can remove the lock plate cause they just did it in mine.
True that the column has to be unlocked before the bypass will work.
I would try removing the lower trim panel and tapping on the bottom of the column while turning the keys to try to get the actuator to unlock.
If you can get it unlocked, at least you will not have to tow the car. You can then install the bypass.
I would go the extra step and remove the lockplate as done under the recall, so the column cannot ever lock again. You still need either the GM Harness K relay or the aftermarket relay to satisfy the BCM and prevent fuel from being cut off, but at least you do not have to deal with a locked column.
I removed the lockplate and installed the GM harness 5 years ago on my 2004 Z06, and it is still working fine.
If you use the COH CLB you don't need any of that other stuff. Just that one single little module.
okay.. after letting the Z rest for 6 hours i just went to garage and put the key in the ON posotion and the Column UNLOCKED
so do i wait for the CLB to arrive placed order on it today.
or
should i take it to the dealer to have the updated recall code 04006C done where the column lock is removed and the harness replaced.
i'm leaning to having the new update done at dealer and then install the CLB?
what you think???

Don't use GM's CLB recall kit. It can fail too and is needlessly complex. Order the one from Corvettes of Houston for $50. It is a single little module and works perfectly. You can install it in about 30 minutes. Mine has worked perfectly for 4 years now. The only downside is that every time that you take the car to the dealer from now on for service you have to specifcally tell them NOT to perform the column lock recall fix.

If you install the COH CLB it is entirely unnecessary to remove the locking plate. Part of the installation procedure involves permanently removing the power to the actuator. With no power there can never be a way for the actuator to engage with the locking plate.
An analogy would be unplugging your TV set and also removing the batteries from the remote just to make sure no one could turn the TV on. All you have to do is unplug the TV.
The clb is a module that communictaes to the computer that the colomn lock is activated or released. After you disengage the column lock with the included cigarette lighter power cord, you insert the plug from the column lock into the column lock bypass module. That's it! The column lock is dectivated. It takes longer to remove the panel to get to the column lock plug than it does to do instsall the clb. The only downside is that a thief can steer your car if he is towing it. I haven't lost any sleep over this. It was the first thing I did when I got the car. The second mod was installing the skip shift bypass module. Same concept. And it took longer to jack up the car than it did to install the skip shift bypass. Two beginner level mods. Total cost-under $100. Both units available at most aftermarket vendors. The clb bypass is a permanant solution to the column lock nightmare.

When you get the CLB, feel free to send me a PM. If you're having trouble you can call me and I'll walk you through it. It'll take 45min your first time and 30min if you do any for your buddies.
