I've read about this happening before especially with the HUD glass. I have 3 stars in mine too and am considering a chip repair instead of replacement. It's gonna have to wait till Spring time now tho.
It took four HUD windshields to get one that didn't have scratches or cracks or blemishes. And still the current one has a slight bend in it while looking out across the defrost vent to objects out front. But after that many I just gave up and accepted it.
The quality of product GM ships to its dealers is horrible. After witnessing this, I concluded there is a significant difference in allowable defects between material that is shipped to the factory and that which is sold to the distributor/dealer network to be sold as new parts.
When you see this kind of stuff over and over, one begins to understand why GM is nearly bankrupt or losing more market share daily. Too many suits running this business not enough importance on the customer.
Then you add in all the trim and other pieces and the total ???
I will let you know when I see the bill
I have a $250 comprehensive and a Excellent Insurance company.
My installer works for The local GM dealer who sells more Corvettes than anyone else in the NW.
They do all their glass work and I am in NO hurry, and want to get it done RIGHT.
Wish me luck.
After I visited a local "Glass shop " and heard the salesperson on the phone telling a customer he could get a job tomorrow selling cars I knew this was not the place for me .
Yea.... selling cars in todays economy has to be a challenging job.
Thank goodness I steered clear of the local " We will pay your deductable shops "
The original owner of my Z16 got a rock chip in the glass on the way home from buying the car brand new...with six miles on it. He elected not to replace the windshield.
I've also elected not to replace the windshield, just for this reason. I may opt to have the chip repaired someday...
I've had to replace my 04 coupe windshield twice, one due to a rock that cracked from side to side and second time due to a deer running in to the side of the car. Both replacement windshields fit fine with no issues. I also had it done by a glass shop with a lot of exprience on high performance and exotic cars.
I just had a hud windshield replaced with an "AP shaded HUD" windshield. The 1st one ordered had distortion in the bottom left quarter. It was returned before the install. They also replaced the weather strip (convertible) $457.00 for the rubber. It was 7 yrs old. Perhaps it could have been saved, but I didn't want to take a chance on it leaking and was included in the cost of replacing the glass.
Damn, and I fixed a rock chip on the Stang before I sold it last July. I hope the Vette never gets a rock chip on that darn expensive HUD winshield glass.
Perhaps it could have been saved, but I didn't want to take a chance on it leaking and was included in the cost of replacing the glass.
They should have replaced the side trim holder too, it has an adhesive backing that when new they peel back and stick into place & secure with screws. It provides a water seal. Same with the weatherstrip. They are also suppose to touch up with this special paint included in the kit before they install the new. You don't want any moisture in there or rusting.
According to the GM instructions if they reuse the old side trim pieces, the must completely remove all the old adhesive on the part then apply a special adhesive and reseal it. Most installer will not spend that time, time is money to them, so its is just easier to replace the side trim pieces. I could pull the invoices to find the exact part number. The inside trim is removed, the weatherstrip is one piece so it is removed then inside there is a trim track piece that is removed that is the part that must be replaced. Sorry I can't remember the exact name at the moment.
They had to replace all those parts every time the installed a defective windshield, so its not cheap if they don't do a proper job. Those parts are that expensive but replacing them over and over tends to eat into their profits.
They come from GM and have all the parts labels on them. The glass shop orders from them, when it comes in then the schedule the service call.
It's just plain poor quality being pushed off to dealers in hopes no one will complain. I've been to the assembly plant and none of these would pass inspection to even get to the assembly line.
