About 2 weeks ago, I had the passenger side half shaft replaced by the dealership due to a bad U joint. On Tuesday, I was at a stop sign on the access road about to get on the highway, so I decided to get on it a little. I got on it in first, the tires spun (with no wheel hop), so I short-shifted into 2nd at about 5k rpm. On the shift, I heard a pop, the motor revved out, and I coasted over to the side of the road, and promptly called a tow truck. I had the car towed back to the dealership and I snapped the same half shaft they had just replaced.
FYI--my car is a stock Z with street tires. I wasn't even beating on the car--just getting on it. Does this seem more than a little weird to anyone? I was thinking either the dealership screwed up the install (how could you screw this up?) or else the part was defective? What are everyone's thoughts?
BTW--My other car is a H/C z-28 making a lot more power with drag radials still on the stock 10 bolt. Never had a problem with that fragile rearend, and it has been driven harder than the vette on occasion.
Defective part or bad install. I had a half shaft replaced about 6 months ago. I have driven mine plenty hard since then with no problems. I suspect wheel hop caused my first one to fail. It didn't hard fail, it just started making a scrunching noise when I would accelerate lightly in first and second.
Update--got the car back w/ a new passenger side halfshaft. Dealership thinks they had installed a bad one the first time. Hopefully this one will be ok.
Hi there. I have a similar problem in my 01 Z06. Question: Besides the 1st gear noise, did it have a combination rubbing, clunking, grinding sound when turning at slow speeds as well?

The low speed turning noises may just be the normal limid-slip differential noises. If the car is cold you may hear some grinding noises in low speed sharp turns. This is normal. It is the limited-slip clutches slipping.

No, no unusual noises while turning. Just the 1rst gear crunch noise on and off the gas.
