I went to Lunch Yesterday in the 2001 Z06.. After Lunch the Car acted like it didn't want to start... After the Car Starts the DIC says. Charge System Fault.. Then a bunch of messages. Reduced Engine Power. Service Traction Control. Service ABS.. Low Voltage and then Back to Charge System Fault again..
Took my Battery to Autozone. OPTIMA RED TOP, They checked it and Charged it, Battery is ok.. Got the Car home, Checked Battery Wires and everything else I could. Went here to the Forums. Checked my Codes, P1518 H C was the only one.. Something about a Serial link From PCM to TAC.. I Reset the Codes, Checked wires again.. Somehow got the car started without codes??? Drove straight to the Dealership to ask them... Now the car is at dealership, It wouldn't even start and the DIC still says, Charge System Fault and is in reduced power Mode with Code P1518 until the Corvette Tech can look at it monday.. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated!
to bad the DIC is not straight forward and say replace alternator
Possible alternator issues but those dry cell batteries do some weird things at times, when they go bad, they go really bad! Will Autozone replace the battery without a lot of trouble? Let us know what happened and how the problem get's fixed. Good Luck!
P1518 is caused by one of the many throttle position sensors on the car not reading the right voltage, it is a fail safe so if the computer goes haywire and opens the throttle all the way up the computer sees that the TPS on the gas pedal is not doing it but the throttle body is which will then through the car in reduced power. I hade the same problem recently and research the possible problems, the first thing you will want to do is clean all you ground points, there is a really good thread on here that will show you how, this can cause issues like this. If this does not fit the problem then I would start looking at the back of the motor to see if there is any wires chafed by the back of the intake, this will also cause this problem. After that I would start looking at your TPS sensors, the easiest and cheapest to replace would be the one right one the throttle body. If this does not help I would start going down the GM checklist that you can find here.
For my problem the car had been sitting for a few months and I believe that some moister got in the throttle body motor causing it to seize up, well when I went out and started the car it broke the motor free in side but got it a little off, this in turn cause the TPS from the pedal and throttle body to be different and started the p1518 code. The way I determined this was I went outside with my car running like crap, cleared all the codes with it off and cranked it up. It should start normally and not really act like anything is wrong. I then punched the gas, just a quick blip all the way to then floor and let off, in a normal instance the reaction of the motor revving should be almost instant but with my car there was a full 2 second delay before the motor would respond, from there I figured that both TPS were doing there jobs by throwing the code and the cause would have to be something directly affecting the throttle movement which would have to be the pedal or throttle, I just got lucky by guessing the throttle. I purchased a used throttle body with the electronics from here for 50 shipped and slapped it on a week ago, no trouble yet (cross my fingers) This my not be what is causing you problem, but I would say if this doesn’t not fix it you will need a TAC module which the dealer is going to rip you off on.
A problem such as this would be better posted in the C5 Tech Section where Bill Curlee will see it sooner and possibly offer troubleshooting tips. He's the guru here for these kind of issues.
From things he's found, he might tell you to look at the accordian tube in the doors for a wire that can and will short to ground that will result in lots of issues with the electronics and if I remember correctly, I think he said the reduced power mode will happen also.
Normally, charge system fault messages are normally the battery or connections to and from the battery. If the battery and connections at the battery are both good, clean and properly tightened, then look at the starter cable from the battery connection. Remember that its hot to the battery. Lastly, send a PM to Bill Curlee
BS!!!!! ARGH!! I'm PISSED It's now the end of the Day on Monday. The STEALERSHIP never called me. So I just called them!. I wouldn't go in there too fired up especially if they only have one Corvette tech, it might be a dis-service to you in the future. I understand your anger( I would be mad too), but I guarantee the dealership is probably alot more worried about their marquee car getting the best service possible. Sorry to say that but JMHO. Good luck on getting it rolling again soon.
I realize you are pissed, but first go to the service manager and discuss with him the issues and ask for a plan to fix and return your car.
DO this in a calm collected manner. If your not satisfied, let it go be nice and walk over to the dealer management offices and ask for an appointment to meet with the dealer's general manager. Explain what is going on, do it without getting upset. You'll get further and better service that way.
Yeah, you guys are probably right.. I'll wait till late tomarrow before I do anything.. And I'll stay Calm... I guess if I just Sold a $150,000.00 Car and The Customer had a Problem I'd do everything possible to make HIM happy too! Yup, There's only 1 Offical CORVETTE TECH or KNOW IT ALL here at the Champaign Illinois CHEVY Dealer..
No problem I've been there myself many times. But I have learned over time honey gets the bees. It's tough to do when your about to explode because they are jerking you around and screwing up your vehicle especially when it is a Corvette.
It is too bad it ended up there and then died, otherwise you comrades here would do anything to help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Keep your cool, remember one vette tech. Remember you rather go out of your way to help someone who's appreciative...kill'em with kindness and carry that fake smile. let us know what happens!
